Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:
Another somewhat small issue I'm afraid. Even so, there are
interesting and positive items to report and we hope you enjoy what we
have for you.
One of the problems AU has at the moment is that a lot of software
development is being done by very small companies or single
developers, and they just don't provide much information. A few words
on a website about a new beta, and that is often all there is. First,
we seldom report on non-released, non-finished software and second,
there is often not enough information to carry a real story. It hasn't
gotten to the point where the relevancy of this publication is in
doubt, but that is a possiblity in the future. We'll keep you informed
of our thoughts.
Another problem is that the entire Amiga world seems to be holding
its breath waiting for computers built to the new standards. They
should have been here by now, and the longer it takes, the more damage
is done due to the uncertainty. If it's going to happen at all, we
need a push to get the Amiga One from dream to purchasable reality,
and we need it very soon. The only alternative is an Amiga OS that
runs natively on X86 chips and compatibles and we don't mean
emulators. Amiga seems completely unwilling to consider this and
that's not surprising. If they persue two strategies, obviously
neither can get the benefit of all available resources. So they go
with the strategy they've picked as the most favorable for the future.
However, I can't help wondering if it isn't time to reconsider, given
the delays. If the X86 is such a horrid idea for future Amiga
operating systems to use, why do we have a story on Amiga OS XL below?
Why are there a number of other emulators already in use, and more
coming?
Amiga, we think it's time for a hard look at your plans. Either pop
an Amiga One on the marker right now or consider giving it up and
writing software for the hardware that already exists. Remember,
you've already decided you're a software company. In that case,
selling to the hardware market that's available makes sense in spite
of it's Wintel history. Heck, we can even save a few PCs from the
curse of Windows that way.

{From the Amiga Inc. website.}

Today is indeed a difficult day for America and for the world.

We at Amiga lift up in prayer the families of those who were killed
and injured in the attacks today.

It is truly a sad day for all of us, and our thoughts and prayers go
out to our nation's leaders, as they must now deal with this
situation.

God Bless us, and may we be ever mindful of our blessings.

 VANTAA, FINLAND - September 9th, 2001 - Saku 2001, the biggest Amiga
event in Finland and organized by the Finnish Amiga Users Group,
gathered about 300 visitors around Finland on September 1st. The venue
was organized completely by volunteers and it proved that there is
still a dedicated following of the Amiga in Finland.

One of the highlights of Saku 2001 was the demonstration by Cloanto's
Michael C. Battilana. He showed the latest JIT compiler version of
Amiga Forever emulation software, which will be available as a free
upgrade to all Amiga Forever users. Michael also hinted that Cloanto
will soon release a completely new software to the Amiga emulation
community.

AmigaDE Party Pack was demonstrated with three computers, two of
which also ran the AmigaDE Player demo version, which was supplied for
Saku 2001 by Amiga Inc. Other programmes included an Amiga demo
marathon in the auditorium, a Payback game competition, Mediator PCI
demonstration and a popular Vaporware registration service. ImageFX,
Aladdin 4D, Shogo and AmigaOS 3.9 were also available for testing. The
event also generated interest among the media.

Finnish Amiga Users Group wishes to thank all the event contributors
and visitors for joining Saku 2001 and making it a memorable event. A
photo report and an IRC log will be published later this week. A
webcam picture collection will also be available soon.

Fellow Amigans,

Over the years, Amigan-St. Louis, (Bob & Diana Scharp), have brought
you many years of Amiga fun and edification. Namely the Amiga shows we
hosted in St. Louis, MO. U.S.A. Since early 1994, we have been
involved with providing the Amiga community with some of the best
Amiga shows ever put on. Eventually we formed our own company,
Amigan-St. Louis, to run these shows as they got too big to handle
with just volunteers.

We have had many famous people and groups attend, exhibit, and
showcase their products at our events. Some notable guests include a
few Astronauts - Steve Nagel and Linda Godwin, a singing and dancing
group - ANNEX, some celebrities - all of the various Amiga owners,
presidents, staff. Notables such as Petro Tyschtschenko, Mitch Stone
of Boycott Micro$oft, radio host Jim Singler, plus too many famous
Amigans to mention.

We have not only hosted shows, but held banquets that have become
famous by themselves. Who would ever forget the reintroduction of
Amiga with Gateway, or even better with Bill McEwen. Then there was
the ROAST of Petro Tyschtschenko. We celebrated Petro's many years of
service to the Amiga community and his retirement the day of the
banquet at our show Amiga2001. That will live in our hearts for many
years.

Unfortunately, we cannot continue the shows for now. There will be no
Amiga 2002© show, sponsored by us. The good news, is the reason why.

Diana and I are adopting a child. Our lives will be even busier than
usual this year and next, so we will have to pass the torch, at least
for awhile, to others. Although we are not ruling out the possibility
of a future show sponsored by us, we just can't possibly do any for
now.

We hope you will understand. We hope you will keep the Amiga in your
hearts. Hey, we hope to see some of you at other shows and events.
Maybe we will be able to bring our newest Amigan with us.

So for now, we bid farewell to the show side of our business, but
please consider purchasing some of our latest products from our
company.

As a final note on Amiga shows in the U.S., I understand that Kermit
Woodall of Nova Design is putting one together for the east coast. It
is supposed to be held the last weekend of March 2002. For
information, keep an eye on Amiga.org and other news sites.

It has been a great pleasure working with many of you, and showcasing
the Amiga and it's capabilities. I wish all of you great success, and
we hope to see you all again.

Best Regards,

Bob & Diana Scharp

Glashuetten, 10th September 2001: HAAGE&PARTNER Computer GmbH and
Amiga Inc. are proud to present AmigaOS XL for x86.

On the demonstration computer system most popular Amiga-68k
applications perform 10-20 times as fast as on a traditional 68060
system. This enormous speed increase is achieved by using a modified
and highly accelerated 68k emulator.

The presentation machine is a standard PC with 1.2 GHz Athlon CPU and
components that are typically fitted to a mid-range specification PC.

At last you can have super fast versions of PageStream, ImageFX,
ArtEffect, Cinema 4D, Real3D and other Amiga applications. Even 68k
games benefit from the unbelievable performance of the emulator.

For the first time it is now possible to install the AmigaOS XL for
x86 onto a laptop. This provides the first Amiga laptop that many
users have been waiting for 16 years to see.

There is no limit to the possibility of further acceleration of the
Amiga. Nearly every month the manufacturers of CPUs and main boards
release new gigahertz creations. Now the Amiga can benefit from this
race too!

AmigaOS XL for x86 includes two emulator systems: Amithlon and
AmigaXL for QNX..

AMIthlon - The fastest Amiga ever

Insert the CD-ROM, switch on your PC and boot into the fastest Amiga
ever. There is no complicated and boring installation. The development
team of Harald Frank (VMC) and Bernd Meyer even implemented native
support for nVidia and Matrox graphics cards providing maximum
graphics performance. Opening windows on the Workbench is so fast that
you can barely watch it anymore.

With AMIthlon you can even use your old Amiga hard-disk in your PC.
Simply connect it to your PC, start AMIthlon and that's it.

AmigaXL for QNX - The most functional Amiga ever

The host operating system for AmigaXL is QNX 6.1. It is included in
the package. QNX has many similarities with the AmigaOS. It has a
micro kernel and the drivers are separate processes. Like devices and
handlers in AmigaOS these can be dynamically started and stopped. This
makes the system extremely light weight and resource efficient.

Features that QNX provides can directly be used within the emulated
Amiga. This includes network functionality and multimedia features.
QNX applications like the web browser Opera® can be started directly
from the AmigaOS screen. One can say both operating systems work
together seamlessly.

 System requirements:

Athlon-, Duron, Pentium-, Celeron-CPU with 500 MHz or more. AmigaOS
XL supports usual graphic, sound and network cards. A complete list is
available on our homepage amigaxl.haage-partner.de or
www.amithlon.com.

 Contents and Pricing:

AmigaOS XL is delivered complete with Kickstart 3.1 license, AmigaOS
3.9 license, QNX 6.1 and the emulator packages on three CD-ROMs.
Recommended retail price is 299,- DM.

 Availability:

The delivery will start about 41st week. Pre-orders are already
taken.

 Distribution:

 Opinions

The first version already was attributed only the best quality and
highest performance by the users.

"We installed ImageFX on AmigaXL during a private meeting in St.Louis
and the speed was amazing. It was like having ImageFX completely
native on a fast PowerPC machine!!" Kermit Woodall, Nova Design

Elbox Computer is pleased to announce formulation of its new policy
aimed at ensuring total compatibility of software written for Mediator
PCI busboards by external developers with hardware and software
designed and produced by Elbox.

Medication by Richard Brooklyn is the first program for Mediator to
obtain the status of "Approved by ELBOX." The "Approved by ELBOX" seal
means that ELBOX guarantees this program to be fully compatible with
Elbox hardware and software.

Medication is a tool for every Mediator user. It allows configuring
all the PCI cards installed in the Mediator busboard in one
easy-to-use MUI based GUI.

Medication allows configuring all of the supported PCI boards
installed in Mediator. It enables setting of: tooltypes in the
Picasso96 graphic system, graphic card parameters, AHI preferences and
sound card settings, TV card settings and control over parameters of
the screen displayed by the TV card.

See the screenshots of the Medication program:

September 2001: PCI invasion: ProStationAudio on G-Rex 4000 with
Terratec audio hardware.

ProStationAudio compatible with G-Rex PCI busboards by DCE and
Terratec PCI audio boards . Frank Mariak, DCE's software designer of
drivers for the G-Rex, confirms that drivers they just made for the
128i and 512i Terratec models have passed preliminary tests for analog
I/O with ProStationAudio. Drivers for the 512i are being extended with
S/P-DIF support.

G-Rex makers and AudioLabs are actively cooperating to provide the
best compatibility between this new PCI busboard and ProStationAudio
(a big thank you to Frank for his continued and accurate work).

The G-Rex PCI busboard, available in two models for the A4000 and
A1200 is a solution developed specifically for owners of P5/DCE
CyberStorm and Blizzard PPC and/or 68K CPU cards. The G-Rex 4000D
replaces the stock A4000 backplane, offering slots for PCI and Zorro
cards. ProStationAudio takes advantage as well of PCI graphic cards
installed on the G-Rex

                          G-Rex 4000D PCI busboard

---
New ProStationAudio 4.20: enhanced plugins support.

ProStationAudio 4.20 is ready, with enhanced support for ALPS
plugins. Starting with 4.20 it's now possible to operate on plugin
panels even when the timeline is stopped. This is possible as plugins
are now fed by a new auxiliary timebase generator when the timeline is
not running (main timebase generator in stand-by).

This enhancement is completely transparent to existing ALPS plugins,
just upgrade to 4.20 and all your currently installed ALPS plugins
will now be active continuously. A side effect of the new scheme is
that now you can also interact with plugins whose insert slots are in
"by-pass" mode (not possible previously).

ProStationAudio 4.20 for AmigaOS is on sale since today, customers
are receiving their free update.

---
ProStationAudio Millenium, T8 and Remix compatible with
SoundBlaster PCI boards.

ProStationAudio is successfully working with Creative's SoundBlaster
PCI boards installed on Mediator busboards, under AmigaOS.

The software has just passed tests at an audio production facility,
under daily working conditions. The test setup includes a Mediator PCI
busboard, SoundBlaster 128 PCI, and VooDoo graphic card for displaying
the ultra-hi-res PSA GUI.

                         Mediator 1200 PCI busboard

Audio hardware is accessed via AHI, drivers for additional Creative's
models are due soon (SoundBlaster Live! to start with) by the busboard
makers.

Elbox, makers of Mediator, confirm also that the PCI busboard
supports installing two PCI graphic cards. ProStationAudio can take
advantage of two display cards (and two monitors) for increased
productivity. This feature, already supported for Zorro graphic cards,
is now available also for PCI boards.

ProStationAudio is the reference audio editing/mastering software for
AmigaOS. With this new developemnt on PCI hardware the range of
supported hardware now includes:

 o Draco
o Amiga with one or two CPU, up to two graphic cards, two monitors
and any AHI-compatible audio card or stock audio chip. Graphic and
audio cards can be on Zorro or PCI busses.

ProStationAudio supports also non-AHI pro cards such as the
SoundStagePro DSP and provides direct access to NewTek Flyer, Sunrize
Studio16 and Digidesign SD audio files, beside standard Amiga, Apple,
Windows and Unix audio files includig MP3.

Informations on other PCI busboard options, such as the G-Rex
specific for PPC accelerators owners, will be published as soon as
audio drivers will be relesed by hardware makers. ProStationAudio is
fully hardware independent and will work with any audio board, PCI or
Zorro, provided AHI drivers are available from hardware vendors.

 WarpJPEG.datatype v44.24 - freeware JFIF/JPEG datatype
(68K,PPC/WarpOS,PPC/MorphOS). NEW:Added support for files containing
non-standard data, preceding the JFIF header. WarpOS version reworked,
now working in a fundamentally different way, to completely banish any
possibility of cache conflicts - it also brings a speed increase of
2%. Minor speedups for the 68k and MorphOS versions. Fixed a bug which
could cause a system deadlock if the dither control or pen precision
options were enabled when using picture.datatype V44 or higher.
Optimizations made to the dispatch engine.

 WarpPNG.datatype v44.20 - freeware PNG picture datatype
(68k,PPC/WarpOS,PPC/MorphOS). NEW: 68k and WarpOS versions now 4-8%
faster than before, depending on image size/type. 4% speedup for
larger images in the MorphOS version. WarpOS version reworked, now
working in a fundamentally different way, to completely banish any
possibility of cache conflicts. Fixed a bug which could cause a system
deadlock if the dither control or pen precision options were enabled
when using picture.datatype V44 or higher. Optimizations made to the
dispatch engine. Updated with libpng 1.2.0.

 WarpTIFF.datatype v44.4 - freeware TIFF picture datatype
(68k,PPC/WarpOS,PPC/MorphOS). NEW:WarpOS version reworked, now working
in a fundamentally different way, to completely banish any possibility
of cache conflicts - it also brings a speed increase for compressed
images of around 2%. Fixed a bug which could cause a system deadlock
if the dither control or pen precision options were enabled when using
picture.datatype V44 or higher. Optimizations made to the dispatch
engine.

 WarpBMP.datatype v44.5 - freeware BMP picture datatype
(68k,PPC/WarpOS,PPC/MorphOS). NEW: Added options to control the
precision/quality of pen allocations for when an image is displayed on
a palette-based display (8-bit). WarpOS version reworked, now working
in a fundamentally different way, to completely banish any possibility
of cache conflicts. Fixed a bug which could cause a system deadlock if
the dither control or pen precision options were enabled when using
picture.datatype V44 or higher. Discovered a bug in the CyberGraphX
picture.datatype, concerning error numbers which would have resulted
in an unknown error being reported by application software if bitmap
allocation failed - added workaround. Optimizations made to the
dispatch engine. PowerPC versions recompiled with VBCC 0.8. Added
French and Spanish strings to the installer.

 WarpPSD.datatype v44.2 - freeware Adobe Photoshop® picture datatype
(68k,PPC/WarpOS,PPC/MorphOS). NEW:Added options to control the
precision/quality of pen allocations for when an image is displayed on
a palette-based display (8-bit). WarpOS version reworked, now working
in a fundamentally different way, to completely banish any possibility
of cache conflicts. Fixed a bug which could cause a system deadlock if
the dither control or pen precision options were enabled when using
picture.datatype V44 or higher. Discovered a bug in the CyberGraphX

in an unknown error being reported by application software if bitmap
allocation failed - added workaround. Optimizations made to the
dispatch engine. PowerPC versions recompiled with VBCC 0.8. Added
French and Spanish strings to the installer.
