Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:
It's been a quiet month, which is one reason you're getting this
right at month's end. It's not that there aren't positive things
happening in the Amiga Community, there are. But at the moment, there
seems to be more gearing up for the future than releasing new products
or making important annoucements.
Amiga shows are one area where a lot is going on. The 26th was the
date of the Kickstart show in the UK. Below we have the first
announcement for the AmiWest show in the US, and the Ottawa show in
Canada. Someday we'd like to be in a position to attend all these
shows, but for now we'll content ourselves with bringing you the
annoucements.
We also seem to have no trouble coming up with damaging feuds between
Amiga companies lately. We carry information on another in this issue,
not because we really want to, but because it must be mentioned to
provide a complete picture of what's happening in our community.
Perhaps I'm wrong but it seems to me that one company in particular is
involved in such feuds far more often than other companies.
We have this time a short but very interesting press release below
from Sharp. In it, you'll read of Sharp demonstrating Amiga
applications at a business show in Japan. Of equal interest, perhaps,
is the fact Sharp has announced a new, high end machine, their "Zaurus
MI-L1" PDA. The annoucements for this new handheld did not include
reference to Amiga at all. What does it all mean? We don't know, but
we'll keep our eyes on this for you.

Hello Mr. Webb,
We talked ever so briefly at the St. Louis Amiga show this spring.
For several years I have had a friend forward copies of Amiga Update
to me. Now I want to get it on my own. I am a souped-up Amiga 3000
user.
In a recent issue covering the St. Louis show you said there was
nothing new there for the Amiga! Did you sleep a lot during the show.
I bought two new cards from Individual Computers that they told me
were new items. I bought several new softwares from FWD Computing. I
got their new Bible Resources CD for the Amiga and I bought their new
Cd to use with my Palm computer. Both worked fine. They had other new
software that I did not get. Do only foreign makers of software get
covered? Each new software is just that NEW. Not everything has to be
Earth shattering to be worth mentioning. I also got some great deals
on used stuff from Diane and Dan Greathouse of Dans Deals, but you
never mention them at shows. I generally like your issues and still
want to get them, but it does seem to me that you play favorites in
what is covered.
All criticism is meant to be constructive and not done out of anger.

Good questions. Yes, there are new things available in the Amiga
market, and Frank's company always has some interesting new items.
He's a super resource I hope we keep a long time.
Here's what I actually said in the show issue. The word "nothing"
isn't there:
"There were only a few new products, the most interesting of which was
a PC on a card from Mr. Hardware Computer. We haven't seen it in
operation, but hope to have more information in the future."
We deliberately didn't do a dealer list or describe the products in
each booth at the show. In the past, the indications have been readers
prefer a different sort of show coverage. If I'm wrong on that one,
let me know, readers. Our approach has been to cover the show as a
whole, and deal with new products as we get press releases or stories
from the companies who make them. This makes for more complete
coverage of the products.
I think that answers your question, but let's not stop there. You've
given me a chance to expand on how the market looks from here
(thanks!).
The "new product" problem is, to use some of your examples, a Bible
CD or a couple new add-on boards for exisiting Amigas do nothing to
drive the market forward. The Bible can be done as text on any
computer. I haven't seen that CD, but I wouldn't be surprised if it
would work just as well on a PC.
The palmtop software is probably more significant. There's a program
called "Spitfire" that allows syncing of Palm OS applications and
Amiga applications. Doesn't work with my Handspring, but does with
other brands. However, while a super thing to have, it's a freeware
application that helps keep the Amiga up with other computers. I use a
number of this type of program to keep my Amiga functional, and would
be lost without them. The authors are among the most important people
out there in the community. This is all good, but what's missing is
original Amiga software. And I didn't see anything new that was really
"Amiga original" at St. Louis, if you understand what I'm getting at.
Would the Bible CD make someone want to buy an Amiga? Would the Palm
sync software? Both are available in just as good packages on other
platforms.
Can't go into lots of details, but here's one example.
The program "Final Writer" was a word processor with originality and
Amiga specific features. It had an Amiga look and feel, and it offered
an alternative to products based on other operating systems. We just
don't have that any longer, with the exception of some products from
Haage&Partner and a few others. If you see a foreign bias, that's
probably the source of it. Just about all the major American players
in the Amiga market have given up or are sitting tight
When Softwood was Amiga's productivity software leader, the folks in
Germany would probably have felt we had an American bias here. Right
now, the best word processor currently being produced is probably
H&P's "Amiga Writer". I hope this product continues to be supported
for a long, long time. "Final Writer" is dead as a product, though
thankfully still usable by those who have it.
There will always be new Amiga software and some hardware add-ons, at
least as long as the Classic machines can be kept running. But we
really aren't getting any new truly Amiga items at the moment. I
expect that to change as the OS continues to grow. The most
significant news relative to Amiga software that came out of St. Louis
was that the OS would not die but continue to live. That immediately
caused a few developers to reconsider the future, and that should lead
to very good news down the road.

beta testers will be one licensed copy of whatever you test.

Urgently Needed: Photogenics Receipts/Reviews/Adverts from America
prior to 1998
I'm fighting a bit of a trademark battle here, and I need to put
together hard evidence that Photogenics was marketed and sold in the
US prior to 1998, or risk losing the name I have become so attached
to. My case is sound and I am certain I will prevail, but your
assistance could help to decisively settle the matter.
A receipt showing the purchase of Photogenics 1.x or 2.0 in America
would be ideal evidence. If you purchased an Amiga 1200 or 4000 that
came with Photogenics as part of the Amiga Magic pack, or a
CyberVision64 that came with the Lite version of Photogenics, or even
the free version of Photogenics 1.2 that was on the cover of Amiga
Computing, I would be very grateful to hear from you. You can submit
your details by clicking here. Even if you don't have your receipt,
your registration will still be helpful.
If anyone has an American magazine reviewing Photogenics, advertising
it's sale (possibly in an advert from Zipperware or Safe Harbor), or
even just mentioning it in the news section, I would like to purchase
it. The August or December 1995 issue of Amazing Amiga would be a
prime example. A non-US magazine can't be used as evidence, unless you
have a receipt proving you purchased it in the US.
Photogenics is my life's work, and I would be greatly saddened if I

S H A R P D E M O N S T R A T E S A M I G A A P P S
(May 22, 2001) Sharp Corporation today began demonstrating
applications provided by Amiga on the Sharp Zaurus hand-held computer
at the Business Show 2001 in Tokyo, Japan.
Sharp estimates that there were over 60,000 attendees at the show on
this, the opening day of the show.
"Amiga believes that there is a very bright future for applications
written for the Zaurus device as well as future hand-held devices
produced by Sharp" said Bill McEwen, President and CEO of Amiga Inc.
This was Sharp's first public showing of AmigaDE applications. The
Business Show 2001 is the largest showcase in Asia of office,
information, and communications technologies. The show runs through
May 25 and expects to draw 400,000 visitors.

Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
On July 28 and 29, Amiga.info will be hosting the Ottawa Amiga Show,
the first Amiga show in Canada since May 1998. The location of the
show has not been settled, but as soon as that information is
available, we will make it available on this website.
Amiga Inc. has already agreed to have a presence at the show and will
be on hand with announcements, demonstrating what the new OS has to
offer everyone and answer questions. The Ottawa Amiga Show is the
first Canadian computer show that Amiga Inc. has attended in over
three years.
Ticket prices and vendor booth costs will be announced as soon as we
have selected a location for the event and will be kept as low as
possible.
The main focus of the show will be Amiga Inc. and the various vendors
who will attend to offer Amiga hardware and software. There will also
be an area set aside for user groups or individual users who would
like sell or trade some Amiga equipment (for a small fee).
Ottawa is about a two hour drive west of Montreal and five hours
north-east of Toronto, and about nine hours from Boston. You can also
get to Ottawa by the Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport.
The current position of the Canadian dollar makes coming to Canada an
inexpensive proposition for our American neighbors. At the time of
this writing, $100.00 CAD = $64.92 USD and $100.00 USD = $154.04 CAD.

all-Amiga show on the U.S. West Coast is gearing up for July 28-29,
2001 in Sacramento California.
The venue for this year's edition of AmiWest is a much more
service-oriented and organizationally alert Holiday Inn Northeast.

organization is changing for the better to better suit the needs of

May 18th, 2001 - Today, Microcode Solutions finalized preparation for
the production of PowerPC hardware to be used in PC compatibles and
next generation Amiga machines.
The hardware will come with software to emulate a Power Macintosh(tm)
computer. More information concerning the emulation will be released
in the near future.
Specifications for the hardware will not be released until the
hardware is ready to ship. However, we can say that the hardware will
have some astounding features designed around simplifying 3rd party
development, including emulation technology.

Announcement regarding the letter sent by Mr Mariusz Wloczysiak from
PR division of Elbox to Fabio Trotta, the author of a Prometheus
review on NoRiscNoFun German Amiga site. By permission given to us by
Mr Fabio Trotta, we attach the letter to this announcement.

Our newest product, the PCI bridge for Zorro III equipped Amigas
"Prometheus" has triggered off many good (and as we unfortunately
observe, also bad) feelings among both users and Amiga companies.
Some competitors with a longer tradition on the Amiga market have
wrongly taken our product as a personal insult. That is completely
wrong, as our only intention is to break the monopoly and revive the
fossilised Amiga market, which has suffered lack of proper competition
in recent years.
Unfortunately, the Elbox company feels the most aggrieved among our
rivals. I met the Elbox CEOs personally and respected them as
well-mannered people. That is why I was unpleasantly astonished by the
news I have been recently receiving about faulty moves of that company
that aim at discrediting Matay in our customers' eyes. Because of the
low style of these accusations, we have been ignoring them until now.
A review of Prometheus has been recently published on the German
Amiga site NoRiscNoFun (http://www.risc-amiga.de). Its author, Fabio
Trotta, tested the dealer, thus not complete, version of our product.
Yet, he gave it a very positive opinion, if you happen to know German,
you can check it for yourself. The review extremely upset Elbox, so
they have sent a letter to Mr Trotta. In that letter, they unlawfully
accused us of illegal use of the Voodoo3 driver made for their
Mediator 1200 product and suggested that the Prometheus card design is
based on Mediator 1200.
I am forced to say this letter is a complete slander based on untrue
facts and faulty accusations and an attempt to disregard our company.
We consider it an open and unlawful strike. We have been openly
co-operating with the authors of Picasso96 system from the very
beginning and they officially support our product. Moreover, we have
paid the P96 licence that is required for commercial use of the
system, which Elbox never did. The other accusations will be refuted
point by point later by the Matay's employees mentioned by names in
the Elbox's letter.
It is sad that Elbox cannot compete with others on honest terms of
the market rivalry. It proves that they do not have any concrete (and
true) arguments against Prometheus. Moreover, it proves they do not
believe in their own products and their success in competition with
other companies, so they use every possible means to delay their
failure. Maybe the new, recently announced Mediator boards also have
"undocumented features" or "hardware protection" as the former Elbox
product? We can only guess.
Hopefully, the Amiga users have now a choice. You will chose a
product that suits you best and we will respect your choice.
Despite that liberal approach to the competition matter, which, while
in a proper form, we treat as a mobilisation for our efforts to work
even harder and make our products even better, we cannot allow to
revile our company, our business partners and our customers. Therefore
we would like to announce that every dishonest and unlawful attack on
our rights will be answered with all available legal means Matay has
as a company.

I have been personally accused by Elbox company that I abused the
possibility of testing Mediator 1200 (since January 2001, not since
November 2000, as Elbox claims) to implement its circuit design in the
making of Prometheus. That accusation is not based on any reliable
proof.
As the people interested in the matter know, as early as in March
1999, while Elbox did not even dream about PCI for Amiga, I started
the AmiPCI A1200 Expansion slot connector project. Shortly after that,
I published a block diagram of my project on a public website and who
knows - maybe it was an inspiration for Elbox to start their PCI
project. However, I did not have anything against it. Unfortunately,
in February 2000 I was forced to stop the project because I have run
out of funds for carrying it on. In June 2000, the Matay company
offered me needed support (also financial) that allowed me to
continue. We also changed our target use assumptions, making our
Prometheus PCI solution befitting all Zorro III equipped Amigas. While
designing Prometheus, I used my experience obtained while working on
the AmiPCI project and also got help from the designer of Zorro III
bus, Dave Haynie. The first working prototypes of Prometheus boards
were ready for testing in October 2000. Let me remind you that I got
the Mediator board from eXec in January 2001. Elbox suggest I used
their technical solutions while having my project almost finished. The
question is - what for? Matay can afford better technical solutions
that those used in Mediator 1200, which is a compromised, cheap
solution made at the cost of proper design and quality.
Another lie is that during the test I have used "special technical
support" from Elbox. I have received the Mediator board with standard
end-user drivers, I have registered as a user and received only such
updates as every Elbox customer could. Moreover, the Mediator test was
commissioned to me by the eXec publisher because of my duties as an
editor and it was not my own initiative. Elbox did not provide me with
any information that could "allow me to learn the Mediator design
details". These details are irrelevant to me as while I tested
Mediator, Prometheus was a finished project and I found it much more
sophisticated and advanced solution.
In their letter, Elbox also remarks that distribution of cracked
software is a crime in Europe. Unfounded accusations are a crime as
well.

As I have been mentioned by name in the Elbox's letter to Mr Fabio
Trotta, I feel obliged to explain a few things.
It is true that I have been the chief editor of eXec magazine since
its beginning until February 2001 (Elbox says March 2001, for which I
do not blame them, as the fact was not announced openly until then). A
few days after my resignation I have received a proposal from Filip
Dab-Mirowski, he offered me work as a PR person. I had already done
some translation for him, so it was not a surprise. We had talked
about such possibility before.
As the chief editor of eXec I had access to the Mediator review
before it was published (in fact, it has not been published yet, as
from the very beginning eXec has had problems with distribution and
sale, one of factors that made me convinced I should quit the position
of the chief editor). However, I did not know that the test performer
has anything to do with another continued PCI project. In fact, I
learned about it after signing an agreement with Matay, it is after
the test was finished and some weeks ago it went public, which is also
why Matay employed me to provide a PR service for his foreign
customers. I thought Grzegorz Kraszewski was the best person to
perform such test as his experience with AmiPCI project made him the
expert of such solutions for Amiga and I think that until now.
While performing my duties as the chief editor, I did not receive any
"top secret" information from Elbox (nor did Grzegorz Kraszewski or
any other eXec editor, to be sure). They only provided us with their
press announcements (sometimes only in English, which forced us to
translate them for our readers) and comments on the test in progress,
nothing more. There is no information in the test that could help me
or Matay in work. It is a hardware test anybody can perform, as
Mediator is available for public sale. The only difference I can see
is that Grzegorz Kraszewski knows PCI better that average users, so he
could do a better, more throughout review. But it is an advantage, not
a drawback and everybody will be able to read the test when the next
eXec issue is ready. I hope it will be soon, as I finished my work as
the chief editor quite a long time ago, but the results of that work
has not been visible yet.
The only contact I had with the Mediator board (not only the test
unit for eXec, but in general) are the test and other users' comments
that can be found on Internet. eXec staff works through the net and we
do not see each other sometimes for months. I personally own an A4000,
not an A1200 and have no intention to buy any Elbox product. Not
because they do not fit my computer nor that I am connected with
Matay. I simply do not consider it worth the money they want. And the
last thing: I remember that when Grzegorz Kraszewski presented his
prototype of AmiPCI board at some Amiga show in 1999, the Elbox people
were very interested in it and asked him many technical questions,
which he answered willingly, as his project was open for everybody.
I will not conclude the last sentence, as unfounded accusations are a
crime and Matay is not intending to violate law, nor am I personally
prone to do so.

Today, in the http://www.trotta.de/club/heart/prome.html site, a test
was published for the Prometheus card.
In this test, drivers for the Prometheus card were assessed as "sehr
gut."
We do have information that the only drivers for graphic cards that
Prometheus' designers presently have are those Voodoo drivers, which
were prepared by Elbox programmers. We have never licenced or
authorised using, and re-working the more, any drivers to be used with
the Prometheus card. As you may know, distributing cracked software is
a crime in all European countries.
However, if the test was written without working graphic card, only
on the basis of a statement made by the producer, please immediately
provide explanation the situation in the test page.
The Prometheus device was designed by Mr Grzegorz Kraszewski, who has
been involved in preparing a test for our Mediator PCI 1200 since
November 2000 -- as the editor of the EXEC magazine (www.amiga.pl -
circulation of about 600 copies). Within the test preparation
activities, Mr Grzegorz Kraszewski had been enjoying special technical
support from our company by March 2001 to enable him learning specific
technical details of the Mediator PCI. Mr Grzegorz Juraszek had been
the chief editor of the same magazine by March 2001.
