Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:
We started this year with a very quiet month. There have been few
real news stories to gather for you. We hope that' not an omen for
this entire year! Balancing this somewhat, one item of news available
in the software world is very significant - a long awaited new release
from I-Browse is out there for the Amiga Community to benefit from. As
a long-time registered user, I put my update in place right away and
have been enjoying it greatly. It hasn't resolved all my problems with
obnoxious websites, but it is clear a lot of work has gone into
improving what was already a very good product. We're quite pleased to
see it.
Given that many of the ususal new sources were silent, and with
I-Browse leading the way, we took a closer look than we often can at
what software came out during the month.
This does highlight a problem we have at AU. We could probably have
included more software items, but there's an unfortunate tendency
among many Amiga software writers to make no information available
about their software except the software download itself. This leaves
us with nothing much to report. Usually, such software is of limited
interest to the Community as a whole. When it's of widespread
interest, we try harder to find something to include in AU. Even then
we sometimes fail - we can't incorporate the programs themselves here,
after all.
So ... if you're developing Amiga software, how about sending us a
press release? Let's see, we'll help you get the word out about your
product and it'll cost you nothing. All you have to do is write a
paragraph or two. Is that a deal, or what? We do limit ourselves to
post-beta software unless the product is something that will totally
eclipse everything else in its field, so please keep that restriction
in mind, but otherwise why not let us help you succeed?
Finally, we are aware that there's the Benelux Amiga show coming up
in a month or two. Again, no press releases are available that we have
seen. We've written the contact person asking for information and hope
to have something for you next time.

We are pleased to unveil that a distribution agreement with Stefan
Burström and the IBrowse Team has been signed and we are now the
worldwide distributor for IBrowse (support for IBrowse is still done
by the IBrowse development team, though).
Furthermore, we are pleased to announce the immediate release of the
eagerly awaited update to IBrowse 2.2.
IBrowse 2.3 brings web browsing on AmigaOS to a new level - below is
a brief summary of the changes since version 2.2:
* Heavily enhanced JavaScript support, based on JavaScript 1.5 and
revision 3 of the ECMAScript specification, allowing access to sites
which was not possible before
* Secure connection support is now available via AmiSSL v2, which can
be configured extensively in the IBrowse preferences. Importing and
exporting of certificates is now also supported.
* Greatly improved general stability and memory leaks plugged
* Improved GUI, including enhanced browser tab functionality (such as
drag´n´drop, keyboard support)
* Issues with the ARexx interface have been fixed and new commands
added
* Hundreds of other minor and major bug fixes + improvements, and
more workarounds added to improve compatibility with broken sites
All these improvements greatly improve the browsing experience, and
allow IBrowse to offer compatibility with many more websites than
before.

Today Crossfire II was delivered to dealers and to everyone who
preordered it.
The boxes that left the house today are Version 1.03 including
several bug fixes and new features as following:
- fully compatible to MorphOS and the Pegasos
- all missions also available in German
- many mission details changed and level of difficulty adapted
- possibility to skip the tutorial
- current weapon is shinyly marked
Furthermore there's an updated demo version of Crossfire II available
at the ATC&TCP support site or at the Dreamworlds Development website.
The updates of the game and the demo to V1.03 are also available
there.
In addition the support site for the game was updated and, among
others, a FAQ added.

Because most of the users have a direct access to the Internet an
AminetCD which is published each second month makes no sense. The
users can get the software in a much faster way from the Aminet.
Because of that the team of the Aminet has decided to stop making the
CDs. This will not affect Aminet itself, which will continue to
function as it has. The newest and last Aminet-CD - number 52 -
(December 2002) offers Superview Productivity Suite II written by
Andreas Kleinert as the highlight. The CD is already provided.
SuperView IV (SViewIV) reads, writes and/or converts more than 50
graphic formats and also integrates external programs like Xpk,
Ghostscipt or MetaView. Additional to the display of graphics on over
20 supported graphic cards (via CyberGraphX, Picasso96 or special
driver systems) the program can also edit different graphic formats.

Amiga x86 - The Product -From Extreme Computing
Amigax86 is the name of a product that combines products known as
Umilator (formerly known as "Amithlon") emulation with the Amiga
Operating System (v3.9). This was to be a standalone product release
by Extreme Computing that combined all available programming done by
Bernt Meyer, with license from Amiga Inc., and several other software
developers to give you the following on a single CD product:

Amiga OS3.9
Improved Graphics Drivers
Improved Sound Drivers
Improved Ethernet & Modem Drivers
and the list goes on...
ImageFX (Full version 3.x)
Several high end games
A plethora of Amiga Utilities (both AmigaOS & x86-enhanced, even an
AmigaDVD player which worked great...)
More x86 enhancements for full functionality of notebooks & other
space saving technology. (We were so close!)
While we were approached early on by Harald Frank in the spirit of
cooperation to advance AmiThlon, Harald never delivered anything.
Extreme ended up in the middle of the early controversy between the
"partners" of AmiThlon. We managed to avoid the mudslinging and legal
issues. Bernie turned out to be a delight to work with, and delivered
some unexpected enhancements in the product rather quickly. We worked
with Amiga Inc. for the latter half of 2002 to try and resolve all the
issues, and finish the product.
The reason for not continuing with this product is mainly due to the
recent announcement by Bernie Meyer to "retire" the product. As we
have spent much time, effort, and many thousands of dollars to try to
bring this project to fruition by the holiday season 2002, we are
simply unable to release the product at this time. We are still very
committed to this project, but have other commitments and priorities
to tend to. The Amigax86 project is "shelved" until further notice.
Amithlon is still available under the AmigaOS XL package, and still
very functional on Desktop computers. Space saving technology such as
Notebooks and custom desktops that we offer will either have to wait
until we have more demand to create a new AmigaX86 code from scratch,
or until the next level of Amiga OS/OE (Operating System/Operating
Environment) is ready. Our hardware line should be significantly
expanded by then, so look for some interesting developments with us
and the Amiga name over the next year.

We are pleased to present you today a demo version of fxPAINT 2.0 -
immediately available through our download section.
Limitations/specialities of the demo version:
saving is disabled
DEMO-text on every image
the demo version is noticably slower than the full version
a small refresh bug due to the DEMO-text-effect when zooming is lower
than 100 percent. This bug ONLY exists in the demo version
some features of the full version are missing completly or are
disabled
The demo version comes with all native modules for 68K, PPC (WarpUP,
PowerUP, MorphOS) and x86 (Amithlon) and gives you - except for the
limitations of the demo - an impression and some insight of fxPAINT
2.0.

BibVision
Bible Text Viewer for Amiga computers.
Description
The BibVision is a Bible text viewer for Amiga computer. It supports
many of the freely available electronic text versions of Bible
translations including
King James Version
The Vulgate
Finnish year 1938 and 1992 translations
Swedish year 1917 translation
German Luther Bibel 1545 translation
The basic purpose of BibVision is to be able to study Bible. You can
select the translation and book according to your taste and interest.
For regular readers there's the bookmark; by setting it you can
continue reading from this point later.
The strength of BibVision is, however, that it supports multiple
(only memory limiting) windows. You can open the Bible simultaneously
from multiple locations, or for comparing, even from different
translations.
Furthermore, there's also a full single-or-multiple book
pattern-matched search feature. You can search words in the Bible
books by using regular AmigaDOS patterns.
Requirements
To use BibVision, you need Amiga computer or equivalent (haven't
tested UAE/Amithlon/...) OS3.5 or newer Reaction classes, libraries
and text.datatype may work also with OS3.1 + ClassAct,not tested
optionally PowerPC processor WarpOS with powerpc.library v15 or newer;
the WarpOS version gives a performance boost specially in creating
indexes appropriate Bible texts, see download section

If you're the sort of person who cannot remember anything unless it's
written down, and you want an environmentally-friendly alternative to
those small, yellow bits of paper which adorn everybody's monitors
these days, then have a look at QuickNote
(Aminet:text/edit/QuickNote.lha). A mini text editor designed for
jotting down, well, quick notes, QuickNote has basic editing controls,
but you can also select text with the mouse and cut and paste to and
from the system clipboard. The neat thing is that when you close the
program, it remembers the text you entered and the window position for
the next time you start the program. To be truly useful, it would be
nice to see QuickNote as a commodity - or at least have the ability to
iconify the window - and be able to handle more than one file at a
time. The danger is, though, that adding too many features would
detract from its orginal purpose.

Report+ is a freeware ReAction-based utility with ten functions:

PureBasic is a programming language based on established BASIC rules.
The key features of PureBasic are portability (Windows, AmigaOS and
Linux are currently fully supported), the production of very fast and
highly optimized executables and, of course, the very simple BASIC
syntax. PureBasic has been created for the beginner and expert alike.
We have put a lot of effort into its realization to produce a fast,
reliable and system friendly language.
In spite of its beginner-friendly syntax, the possibilities are
endless with PureBasic's advanced features such as pointers,
structures, procedures, dynamically linked lists and much more.
Experienced coders will have no problem gaining access to any of the
legal OS structures or API objects and PureBasic even allows inline
ASM.

PureBasic AmigaOS
PureBasic was born in the middle of 1998. We were in awe of the
quality and speed afforded by assembly, the so called 'low-level' (but
relatively difficult) programming language. At the same time, PowerPC
accelerators for the Amiga were selling more and more, but lacking an
easy language in which to develop PowerPC software. We decided to try
and create a brand new compiler based on Standard BASIC, but with some
extensions (mainly similar to Blitz Basic II) which would produce
small, highly optimized code (very much like assembly) for both 680x0
and PowerPC processors. If you already know Blitz Basic, or Amos, you
will have no problem in getting to grips with PureBasic. It has the
same syntax rules, but with a much more open and flexible philosophy,
better suited to the AmigaOS environment.

are included in the final executable, so the size will always remain
as small as possible. The functions contained in a library MUST be
written in pure assembler (PPC or 680x0), to ensure maximum
performance. Note: any user can develop their own libraries; all tools
are provided in the full package.
The advanced system of structures and pointers allows the user to
easily access the OS structures, allowing extra information to be used
with regular commands. AmigaOS 3.1 is fully supported through a large
file containing ALL constants and structures. Independent files are
provided, so that if mistakes are made during conversion they can be
easily corrected.
For all assembler optimizer freaks (like us ? :-): You can compile
programs into a 'commented asm output file', containing all code in a
comprehensive asm format; all directly recompilable with phxass. It
has never been so easy to optimize small program parts!
The PureBasic source code has been programmed in a very modular
fashion, and can support any processor or operating system. If AmigaOS
moves to AmigaDE or AmigaPPC, there will be no problems as the user
can still use exactly the same source code.

Concurrent Versions System (CVS) -OS & Port

What is CVS ?
CVS is a version control system, which allows you to keep track of
all of your files (usally source code), keep a log of who, when, and
why changes occurred, etc., like RCS or SCCS. It handles multiple
developers, multiple directories, triggers to enable/log/control
various operations, and can work over a wide area network (i.e.
internet). The following tasks are not included; they can be done in
conjunction with CVS but will tend to require some script-writing and
software other than CVS: bug-tracking, build management (that is, make
and make-like tools), and automated testing. (Quoted from the CVS

About this port
The actual version of this port is called a `rough port` because it
is lacking some features the original unix version or other ports
have. On the other hand, however, you get everything, and perhaps
more, you got with the previous Amiga ports of CVS because this port
does not require `ixemul.library` to work and it does not require an
RCS installation as it is completly self contained. The port also
probably would win a price as the largest `pure` executable; it can be
made resident.

+ TCP/IP support (for connecting to servers via TCP/IP)
+ SSH support for secure connections
+ no ixemul.library needed.
+ no RCS installation needed.
+ could be made resident (less memory+faster)

- no server support (you can`t use an Amiga as a server)
- no full file protection bits support
on strong request we will consider to implement the above mentioned
missing features, but they are no MUST because the actual version will
fit most requirements. Please note that we already implemented SSH
functionality because of user requests !
