Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:
Well now, this has been a very strange month. At present time, there
are two Amiga products - game packs - on the shelves at CompUSA. If
you check it out at one of their stores, or company website, you'll
see them listed with "Manufacturer: MicroSoft". In fact, they're Amiga
products being resold by MicroSoft. I find that both encouraging and
amusing.
Just plain strange is the affirmation by the folks who run Genesi
(makers of the pseudo Amiga Pegasos computer and MorphOS) that there
is a new CEO at Amiga. We have a carefully worded message from Fleecy
Moss below in answer.
Actually, if Amiga were to bring a new CEO on line that could well be
a good sign. The first thought would be the company had grown too
large for Bill McEwen to handle everything himself. Fleecy's note
seems to indicate similar thoughts. According to Genesi, the new CEO's
name is Garry Hare. Time will tell.
Interesting things in this issue, we hope you enjoy it.

Brad, Thank you for your continuing work on the newsletter. Its about
all that I receive that keeps me "in the know".
I have a question.
I am using "cloanto's Amiga Forever" and it is a daunting task to
understand the ways to get it working with my favorite Amiga programs
and, of course, there is no one available to help when I am stumped.
I would like to install Final Writer and have transferred the info
from the amiga disk to a PC formatted disk. However, when I try to
unpack & install within Amiga Forever page I get an error. Thank you
for any thoughts you may have or direction you can point me towards!
Nelson
~~~~~~
Nelson,
Thank you for the kind words. As for your question, let's toss that
out to our readers. There's bound to be someone who can help with this
particular software mix, since I don't use "Amiga Forever". It would
help, though, to know the exact error message. Lacking that, perhaps
someone could send a set of instructions on how one goes about getting
"Final Writer" working with Amiga Forever.
{Rumors have been circulating this month that there is a new CEO
taking office at Amiga Inc. The rumors seem to have originated from
people associated with the Pegasos/MorphOS products (Genesi). Below is
a responce from Amiga CTO Fleecy Moss. We have seen this post on more
than one website, but it seems to have been first posted at AmigaWorld
(URL at end of item). Brad}
"Has Amiga Inc changed CEO?"
Fleecy: As of this moment Bill McEwen is the CEO of Amiga and if a
new CEO was to be brought in, it would be because of Amiga expanding
as a company and Bill needing to concentrate on being Chairman and
President - currently he is CEO as well and three top jobs in a
company that is attracting the attention we are is at least one job
too many.
Any CEO to be brought in would be as part of the team and would be
totally in sync with the current strategic direction of the company.
If someone is posting information to the contrary then it can only be
for ulterior motives.
{Last month we mentioned the "Ask Fleecy" feature now running weekly
on AmigaWorld.net (URL in previous item). We won't be bringing you all
the postings there, as they would easily fill the newsletter and we're
not sure of the legality of running the entire thing. However, the
following recent answer from Fleecy is one we couldn't pass up. Under
"fair use" rules, we think we can pass this along to our readers. Food
for thought.
We strongly encourage you to stop by the AmigaWorld website to check
out the information Fleecy provides. This is an excellent service to
the community, much to the credit of AmigaWorld.net. Brad}
5) ssolie: Does Amiga Inc. still plan to take back control of the
AmigaOS 4.0 source code (i.e. purchase it back from Hyperion) and
produce your own releases beyond AmigaOS 4.0?
Fleecy: Absolutely. The transfer of AmigaOS4 to Hyperion was done for
a number of strategic reasons, one being to protect the AmigaOS for
the community and prevent it being left in limbo if anything should
happen to the parent company as was witnessed after Commodore and
Escom went bankrupt. We will reassert ownership when both Hyperion and
Amiga judge the time to be right, and there are certain less than
obvious benefits to maintaing the current situation.
The location of ownership has nothing to do with the future plans.
Amiga Inc is fully committed to the development and expansion of
AmigaOS way beyond AmigaOS4.0. Detailed planning and design for
AmigaOS4.1 is already underway alongside the parallel path of AG2. AG2
technology will be rolled into the AmigaOS4 release family as and when
it is ready but the two will not be dependent on each other - in other
words potential delays in one will not affect the other. Contrary to
the occasional speculation that Amiga doesn't care or has no plans for
the AmigaOS, that product line is and always has been vital to our
future success. Back in 1999, it would have been impossible to gain
interest and investment in a company offering a desktop competitor to
Microsoft and so our public strategy had to be tailored to fit that
reality.
It isn't 1999 anymore.
From the beginning of the AmiWest shows, certain goals and objectives
have been in evidence. While those who have been connected with the
show are aware of most of those goals and objectives, many of you who
attend may not be aware or may be new to the show. So for you (and to
remind others), here are the things we are trying to accomplish with
each and every AmiWest show.
1. First of all, we are providing a place for the Amiga community to
gather. This gathering takes place from among a worldwide community of
developers, users, retailers, and others interested in our great Amiga
computers. Old friendships are renewed and new friends are made among
the many attendees at AmiWest. User groups are especially encouraged
to come and exhibit through a user group special rate policy detailed
on our website. (see www.sacc.org/amiwest/exhibform.html#pricing)
2. Second, we provide a place for breaking news announcements of
interest to the Amiga community. Amiga Inc. has always sent a
representative to our show and other companies who are part of the
Amiga marketplace have also sent their representatives to announce
significant developments.
3. Third, we provide an encouraging, peaceful atmosphere where even
those in conflict can come, bury the hatchet, and meet in a
high-energy environment for exchange of ideas. We tell those that are
in conflict, legally or otherwise, to please leave their conflicts for
other arenas.
4. Fourth, we provide a place where vendors can come to sell the
latest and greatest Amiga technologies as well as some of the best
tried and true Amiga hardware and software. Each has its advocates and
we support the efforts of our vendors who support our show and make it
possible.
5. And fifth, we try to be as educational as possible along the way.
We're working on a few surprises this year as we try to do every year.
We're also continuing our practice of giving qualified presenters a
platform to demonstrate what the Amiga can do.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So remember,
AmiWest 2003 is rolling! The facility is reserved and the vendors
are notified! Keep watching for these releases and tell everyone
that you know - the Amiga and the Amiga community is alive and
well!
CRONOSOFT is a new software distributor for NEW software or Old
UNreleased software for older platform systems, whether commercially
unsupported or still supported, as with the Amiga for example.
CRONOSOFT invites anyone, from any part of the world, who still
develops software and wants to sell it ( Games, Utilities, etc. ) but
doesn't want the hassle of packaging and distributing it to buyers
themselves, to submit their programs for evaluation. If accepted, your
software will be sold via the main website, and other outlets such as
eBay for example, complete with color inlays or covers, which can be
created for you at no extra cost if you don't/can't provide your own,
plus documentation, etc. also at no extra cost to you.
The average 8bit game cassette is sold at a standard price of £2.99,
however this is not set in stone and the price at which you would like
your software to be sold can be discussed with us. Of course more
powerful systems, especially larger programs sold on CD, have a higher
standard price. Once again the price is negotiable, but CRONOSOFT
would like to make software as affordable as possible to be able to
distribute it to a large number of potential buyers.
CRONOSOFT makes its income by sharing the profits with you. So far
the software currently available has had very good sales, and
extremely good sales considering it has only started a little over a
month ago! There are also many other titles to come besides what is on
the Future Releases page and we'd like your software to be among them!
Systems currently supported are the following:
3DO
Amiga ( Upto 3.9 )
Amiga CDTV / CD32
Amstrad CPC
Atari 400/800/XL/XE ( Tape )
Atari ST
Commodore 16 ( Tape )
Commodore 64 ( Tape or disk )
Commodore Vic 20 ( Tape or disk )
Dragon 32 ( Tape )
Oric/Atmos ( Tape or 3'' / 3.5'' disk)
Sega Mega CD / Sega CD
Sharp MZ ( Tape )
Sinclair ZX Spectrum and compatibles ( Tape, +3 disk, Microdrive,
Tr-Dos BetaDisk )
Sinclair ZX81 ( Tape )
Tandy CoCo ( Tape )
Please note that CRONOSOFT may support a wider range of platforms in
the future. Newer OSs such as Windows, Linux, Mac etc. may also be a
possibility. If you have software for another system please don't
hesitate to get in contact with us for possible inclusion. If it is
not possible at this time then perhaps in the future.
AmiPR ImageLayer adds the feature of previewing images in the
standard Workbench directory lister to the Amiga. The program creates
thumnails of the picture for every image in the selected path and
stores it in a separate directory for quick display. Your old
Workbench icons will not be deleted.
AmiPR ImageLayer needs OS 3.5 as the Preferences tool is based on
Reaction.
Our new soundcard Delfina was introduced successfully last weekend at
the AmiGBG show in Gothenburg, Sweden. Meanwhile, all important
European dealers have been supplied, so the anticipated delivery date
of April 7th can be kept without problems.
The module that is available now is ready to be used on nearly any
Amiga. The included 22-pin cable for the A1200 clockport can also be
used to connect to an X-Surf Ethernet card in a "bigbox" Amiga.
Probably the most important reason to buy this card is the DSP, the
digital signal processor. For example it allows playing back MP3
nearly without CPU load. MP3 is a popular audio format that is also
used by artists to put demos on the internet. Free music samples and
full titles are available on sites like Entertainment-Mafia. With the
Delfina, an Amiga can playback MP3 even without an accelerator in the
best possible quality.
