29.8.99 iBrowse 2.1 Next Week ?
You guys are the most patient people in the world and we thank you for it. We don't need to tell you how big this upgrade is, and we know you understand that we want to get it as right as we can before we release it. We are very, very, very close to release.

This is the situation as of 27 Aug 99: The final beta has been tested and the reports from the beta testers are all in. A couple of bugs were spotted and Stefan will fix those this weekend. All being well, iBrowse 2.1 should be released next week.
The plan is to make it available as a download that will run in demo mode until your order and pay for it, at which point you will receive a key file via email which will unlock the program. We've also prepared an update manual for iBrowse 2 in HTML format, but you may have to wait a few extra days for that. Well, unless you would prefer us to delay the launch until the manual is checked by Stefan for technical accuracy?

28.8.99 Hyperion brings Smacker video codec to the Amiga
Hyperion is pleased to announce that it has entered into a license agreement to bring "Smacker", an industry standard video codec developed by RAD Game Tools and used in over 1400 games, to the Amiga. Smacker is currently available for Mac (68K and PPC), DOS, Windows 3.X, Windows 95 and Windows NT and provides for both file-format and API multi-platform compatibility.
"We could have developed our own video codec", says Ben Hermans, managing partner of Hyperion, "but since both Heretic 2 from Activision and Shogo: MAD from Monolith use Smacker, we decided to cut down on development time for both titles and license and port Smacker instead. On top of that, Smacker is really very fast and very efficient if you are only using 256 colors. It is doubtful we would have been able to achieve the same result with the limited development time available to us."

12.8.99 M&M goes 3D hardware only
The work so far done on M&M has been impressive but to really appreciate the quality of the work, a high spec amiga is required. Too many features that can be seen in the screenshots on the website can only be done at a decent speed using 3D hardware acceleration. So the decision has been made to make M&M a 3D hardware only game for the amiga. As Warp3D is being used, any GFX card with a 3D chip with a Warp3D driver will work. The 68k version will almost certainly need an 060 as well.

3.8.99 Lambda Progress Update
Lambda development has been moved to PC but it's still planned to target the Amiga, namely the PPC equipped with 3D hardware. Software rendering is still going to be supported, but it will not be the primary concern anymore. Some of the planned changes: dumping the 256 colour limitation. The new engine will be truecolour based. AGA should be supported through dithering the internal 16 bit images into a static 256 colour all-purpose palette, which will of course look worse than before, but is better than nothing. Standard graphics boards will get real 16 bit rendered graphics, and 3D hardware will be supported through Warp3D. Among the utopistic features of the new engine are fully coloured directional, point source, and ambient lighting, and better special effects. Author is also considering optional bump-mapping (for 3D chips that can do or fake it: ViRGE and Permedia 2 most probably cannot even fake it, but Voodoo 1 can, although it needs two rendering passes). On the audio side he's planning to support 3D sounds, although on the Amiga these will be reduced to normal panned sounds with surround encoding. Lambda is an experiment with very long development time and there is no assurance that the game will be finished.

2.8.99 FreeAmiga News
Free Amiga Organisation redesigned their site again.
aGTK news: GTK++ is an incredibly popular GUI toolkit for Un*x systems, and a great deal of new software relies on it. aGTK is an attempt to port the foundations of GTK to the Amiga in order so that other GTK++ reliant applications can be ported. (GIMP, XChat, ...) aGTK is not without its problems. It is firstly hugely difficult to port, and secondly the support behind the project is flagging. Hans Joerg Frieden moved to the Hyperion team porting Shogo and Heretic II and Paul Hill cannot manage on his own. Therefore this bold project cannot continue unless they get significantly more interest and programmers willing to help us with the project. Anyone interested ?

Jim Collas: "Some people have an unrealistic view of what should be communicated publicly. I understand peoples thirst for information but we have already communicated much more information on our plans than any other company would provide in this situation."
