30.4.2k Aminet mirrors?
|
This topic has recently been brought up incomp.sys.amiga.misc,
but was also discussed elsewhere before. With what seems like more and more Aminet mirrors closing down or becoming very unreliable, it was suggested that Amiga should
host a mirror on their site. Seeing how Aminet is a prime resource for past, present and future Amiga programs and files, I think it would be a sensible decision for
Amiga to either host, or sponsor, a dedicated mirror on a reliable server with a good backbone. What do you think?

29.4.2k Hyperion News

The first progress report of Amiga SiN by Peter Annuss.
Includes first Amiga screenshots! As expected, the experiences Hyperion gathered with Heretic II gave quite a boost to
the porting of SiN. Since both games are based on the Quake2-engine, there are a lot of similarities in the source-code and
they were able to reuse large parts of their codebase.

23.4.2k What does RTOS abbreviation mean?
|
We've alway thought RTOS is an abbreviation for Realtime Operating System. If that term means the same to you, you could find confusing,
why AmigaInc. are using the term in conjunction with Run Time Operating System. What is even more confusing to us is the fact, that such
run time OS advantage should be "in the way it handles multitasking", as "an RTOS uses fixed scheduling". You can find above claims in
Inside the Amiga article of Amiga World magazine.

being present in their software architecture - realtime, microkernel, highly modular architecture, high
linux compatibility, "accessible source" model, easy drivers development, transparent networking, embeddable
GUI and many other advantages, already known from their website documentation. QNX also plans on establishing

15.4.2k MorphOS and akDatatypes
|
Andreas Kleinert: "As a small addition to my recent MorphOS statement - which might have been misleading
in that point - I'd like to add the following: although special akDatatype versions for MorphOS are
planned, already the current PPC datatypes (and most likely all other of my PPC applications, although
not yet tested entirely) will run without any modifications. The special MorphOS versions just are for
gaining extra speed and dropping old 68k/WOS/PPC ballast overboard."

15.4.2k Digital Media Leaders Join To Deliver Integrated Programming Interfac
|
Industry leaders including 3dfx, 3Dlabs, ATI, Compaq, Discreet, Evans & Sutherland, IBM, Intel, S3, and SGI
today unveiled their collective vision to develop a standard application programming interface for graphics, video,
and audio media devices. Creation of a standardized API will allow digital content application developers to more
easily integrate video and graphics capabilities into their application suites, and will make these applications more
portable over multiple operating systems, CPU architectures, and add-in hardware devices. Similar to the current
industry standard for professional 3D graphics- OpenGLÒ , this new API will consist of standard techniques for input
and output of digital video and audio data, and will include extensions to OpenGL to support seamless video and
graphics integration.Read more

12.4.2k MorphOS Overview
|
Are you frustrated that there have been no major steps forward towards an updated Amiga Operating System since 1993 ?
Are you are disappointed that the 2 years delayed PowerPC boards didn`t provide a 68k emulation ?
Are you frustrated that the uncounted numbers of people which were in control of Amiga Inc., never delivered
a new PPC AmigaOS or plan to deliver something which has almost nothing to do with what you used your amiga for ?
Are you sick of the countless empty words in this market where many people can`t deliver what they promised ?
The people which formed the face of the Amiga desktop since 1993 by developing the first: 68060 boards in 1994;
Truecolour RTG standard in 1994; Truecolour picture datatype standard in 1995; PowerPC boards in 1997 for the Amiga...
...will bring you now what you`ve always wished for...AmigaOS running on PPC in 2000...MorphOS.

3.4.2k Amiga2k: BoXer News
|
Roger Wyatt: "Anti-Gravity Products of Santa Monica, California has acquired BoXer technology from Access Innovations.
As well, the world-wide manufacturing and distribution rights have been purchased from Blittersoft.
Paul Lesurf of Blittersoft will become head of the UK office. Mick Tinker now works for Anti-Gravity as Director of BoXer development. BoXers will be built
in California, by Anti-Gravity either in Los Angeles or Palmdale.
Paul B of Anti-Gravity brought a BoXer motherboard to the Banquet. As I sat at the same table, I was able to observe the board closely. It appears to be well
beyond the prototype stage. Quoting from the press release: "Two additional engineers have been hired to complete the AGA compatibilty aspects of an
all-in-one chip to be known as Hombre (TM)." Interesting isn't it? Final development and testing of the board are underway. A list price of $1895 USD was
posted. See www.antigravity.com for details and specifications."

2.4.2k Java Web Browser for New Amiga
|
"Espial is providing an 800k java web browser for New Amiga." It's probably called Escape.
Escape v4.0 is a web browser that delivers big functionality in a small footprint of less than 800kb.
Supporting advanced Internet standards including HTML 4.0, forms, frames, tables, applets, images,
JavaScript 1.4, SSL v.2.0/3.0, DHTML, DOM, CSS... Escape v4.0 offers the most extensible plug-in
capability of any browser available to the embedded market. Popular multimedia browser plug-ins
including Real Networks G2 media player, Macromedia Flash, MP3, QuickTime, MIDI and more can be
supported by Espial Escape v4.0. Escape 4.0 also integrates support for Sun's JMF (Java Media
Framework), enabling it to load audio or visual media.

2.4.2k Amiga 2K: The banquet
|
Roger Wyatt: "Bill McEwean's after dinner talk and demonstration was stunning in its sweep, complexity, and scope.
Here are a few highlights: Newtek has placed its source code for the Toaster and Flyer into Open Source status.
See www.toaster.amiga.org for details.
Greenboy of the Pheonix Group joined Amiga's Gary Peake on stage to shake hands and announce that there was no split in
the Amiga community. Pheonix and Amiga are working together.
Sun is a strategic partner of Amiga.
Bill McEwen: "Our success will be the embrase of Java." Expect to see many Java apps for Amiga.
Red Hat is another strategic partner. So is Corel.
Amiga will be the common consumer application layer for 26 different versions of Linux.
The new Amiga developer environment will run on top of a Red Hat Linux base and foundation.
Amiga will be the common consumer interface for Corel Linux apps.
Thus Amiga will provide Java and Linux with a common interface. Amiga will be extensibile running on cell phones to servers.
117 current Amiga titles are being ported to the Tao based New Amiga OS.
Espial is providing an 800k java web browser for New Amiga.
There will be a new version of Scala for the new OS.
Animators from Disney provided the conceptual designs for the look of the new hardware reference designs. They are beautiful.
They will be going up soon on the Amiga website. Disney used over 500 Amigas to produce
computer animation for their films.
Amiga is aligned with an array of consumer electronic firms including Sony, JVC, and others.
There will be an upcoming announcement regarding Amiga participation in a global ISP alliance.
In the weeks to come Tech Head Stories will provide both in-depth analysis of the Amiga
announcements in streaming video, text, and graphic formats. Stay tuned."

1.4.2k Amiga2k Show News
|
First short report from Roger Wyatt: "Sprits are high and there is a feeling of optimism among the attendees of Amiga 2K here in Saint Louis, Missouri. Bill McEwen, Fleecy Moss, and Petro Tyschtschenko were in attendance as Bob Scharp opened this popular Amiga show.
After a brief opening statement from Bill McEwen, it was a Petro and Scharp mutual admiration society with each of them recieving awards from the other in recognition of their efforts in support of the Amiga and the Amiga community. Randihar Jesrani, owner of Compuquick
Media Center was recognized as a major US vendor of Amiga products."
To watch the webcam you can either follow this link or download some webcam software such as WebVision22a and set it pointing at
http://ugn.amiga.org/webcam/webcam.jpg for 15 second intervals.
Cleaned-up IRC-log from the Q&A with Fleecy Moss.
Most interesting: developer machine is K6-2 500Mhz, 64MB, Geforce 256, Linux and Elate - cheap, runs the Tao system very well.
Consumer system should be out before the end of the year.
