30.4.2001 Photogenics Announcement: We need your HELP!
|
Urgently Needed: Photogenics Receipts ReviewsAdverts from America prior to 1998.
"I'm fighting a bit of a trademark battle here, and I need to put together hard
evidence that Photogenics was marketed and sold in the US prior to 1998, or risk
losing the name I have become so attached to. My case is sound and I am certain
I will prevail, but your assistance could help to decisively settle the matter.
A receipt showing the purchase of Photogenics 1.x or 2.0 in America would be ideal
evidence. If you purchased an Amiga 1200 or 4000 that came with Photogenics as part
of the Amiga Magic pack, or a CyberVision64 that came with the Lite version of
Photogenics, or even the free version of Photogenics 1.2 that was on the cover of
Amiga Computing, I would be very grateful to hear from you. You can submit your
details at http://www.paulnolan.com/tmregister.html.
Even if you don't have your receipt, your registration will still be helpful."

29.4.2001 WarOS version of Payback on it's way!
|
According to James Daniels of Apex-designs, a WOS version of Payback should be complete within 1-2 months,
and the WOS version will be free to download for users who have already purchased Payback. For those who
haven't bought this excellent game yet, now would be a good time to do so if you have a PowerPC board.
The WarpOS version was delayed because DCEcom had James Daniels' PPC board for repairs. The already great

its merits on emulators such as Mame and Bliss, this was the perfect choice for the development of this
program. In this first BETA release there is support for (shared) keyboard and 2 joysticks.

New LAME alpha version 3.89!
"[..] since 3.88beta had a few nasty bugs, I decided to release the latest 3.89alpha instead
(don't let the "alpha" deter you, the only changes are some vital bugfixes and a few new
options [..]" The 68k binaries are now compiled with GCC (2.95.2 MorphOS crosscompiler), this
gives us yet another speedboost (not to mention less compiletime for me. ;)) ) .. I've compiled
in stackswap code, so this version should behave just as well as the previous SAS/C compiled
ones, please tell me if it doesn't! history
NOTE: LAME's stack requirements have increased!!!
I logged the 68k binaries going dangerously close to the previous default of 100000
(and the PPC binary downright nuked) at normal operation, so I increased the default to 163840
...this means you prolly won't need to worry about setting the stack for the 68k binaries, but
you *MUST* give the PPC binary enough stack, or else you will crash'n'burn for sure!

22.4.2001 AROS News
|
Iain Templeton made datatypes.library build when linked against a version of c.lib/amiga.lib which
contains debug code. AllocSignal() spends now less time in Forbid(). Using an uninitialized
semaphore will now throw an AN_SemCorrupt alert. And he improved the code of Procure() and Vacate.
Fabio Alemagna added a new tool which allows to do something similar to DICE's __autoinit__ feature
(call functions automatically at startup). This allows AROS' startup code to automatically open all
libraries which are used by a program.
Henning Kiel and Fabio Alemagna began to implement all missing functions of the ANSI C library.
Aaron "Optimizer" Digulla continued to work on the web site. All thumbnails are generated
automatically, so they were deleted in the CVS. All screenshots were sorted into subdirectories to allow
automatic generation of the screenshots page. Plus many pages have now Tables of Contents and a lot of
old docs were ported.
Peter Eriksson has improved his Font preferences. Now it has all the menus of the original
(except for "Create Icons?").

20.4.2001 ParaGlide Voodoo Module "would have been worth it"
|
Hans-Jörg Frieden posted on ANN about the ParaGlide:
"Shogo would run perfectly on a Voodoo 1. The fillrate of this card is a bit higher than the Permedia2,
and it has all the blending modes required for Heretic II to run at full quality, so yes, not having it
is a loss. I wouldn't be particularily keen on writing drivers for it, since the Voodoo 1 hasn't got
a setup stage (meaning caluclations required like with the ViRGE - not a pretty sight), but the result
would have been worth it, especially since the Picasso IV was an exceptionally good card..."

16.4.2001 AROS & MorphOS together ?
|
Since there has been some confusion, here are some reliable infos about the relationship between AROS and MorphOS.
Aaron Digulla: "MorphOS wants to provide an Amiga clone and they need some code to fill gaps in their emulation
(for example, parts of Intuition). They asked us if they could use our work and, being an open source project,
we "allowed" them to port parts of AROS to MorphOS. This is exactly the same what we did when Haage&Partner
approached us whether they can use our Colorwheel gadget in OS 3.9 which we "allowed", too. I say "allowed"
because that is essentially what we want them to do :-) AROS is meant as a test labratory to develop new
technologies which might prove useful for the next versions of the AmigaOS. We do this independently of Amiga Inc,
MorphOS and H&P but always with the goal to provide them with something useful as well as providing
adventurous Amiga users with something that feels quite familiar. So AROS and MorphOS have not "joined forces"
or become one project. MorphOS just uses part of our work which is what our work is meant for."

WarpPNG.datatype v44.15 - yet another PNG datatype (WOS/68K/MOS). Changes since 44.14:
The built-in image gamma value (used when no value is defined in the prefs) was incorrect - fixed.
Gamma correction did not work in the 68040 and 060 versions, causing images to be mostly black or white if the default gamma values were not used.
This was due to a non-working FPU pow() implementation - mathieeedoubtrans.library is now used instead. Does not affect speed.

9.4.2001 P96 team Voodoo driver 65% done
|
Mr. Abt has posted on the Amiga-Mediator ML on the status
of the Voodoo drivers for P96: "It is going well. I would say that it is about 65% done. Although Alex is doing the
driver and I only have second hand information. Needless to say that we are doing the driver from scratch. It is
easier to write a driver based on good documentation - which we have - then reverse engineering one that was written
by someone who doesn't know everything about the inner mechanisms of Picasso96." - " No, the Elbox driver is _not_
perfect. It works. But it is far from being a candidate for a reference implementation of a Picasso96 driver if you
get what I mean." - "We are not yet at the point of benching the driver against another. And even if we were, our
results would probably be not quite like what you would get with a fast system as our A1200 only has a 25MHz 030...
:-)" - "Release date? Unclear. We are currently also busy with other stuff due to various ongoing negotiations."

9.4.2001 Digital Almanac III - English version finished
|
"After a longer delay, I can finally present the English version of Digital Almanac III !
If you don't know what it is, here is a short explanation. DA III is a planetarium
program comparable to professional programs you can find under Mac or Windows. It is the
only one left on the Amiga market - after Distant Suns and Digital Universe left the Amga -
that supports modern hardware like PowerPC (under WarpOS) and graphic boards. It offers large
data bases (e.g. internal one million stars, GSC catalog, 100,000 deep-sky objects and minor
planets), high accurate calculations, eclipse calculations, calendar mode, meteorite showers,
complex animation modes, textured planetes and moons etc. Just too much to mention it all here !
Read more about the program on the DA III homepage. There you can take a look at the
full documentation with screenshots online! The CD-ROM contains 600 MB full of data for DA III,
pics, videos and some useful free programs. If you are a fan of astronomy and you like to have
such an Amiga-unique program, Digital Almanac III is the one for you!"

9.4.2001 No A4000 AmiagOne? - OS4 on CSPPC & BPPC?
|
Mr. Fleecy Moss, Vice President of Product Development for AmigaInc. posted on the AmigaOne ML: "Amiga Inc don't
make hardware, we make software. It is only the ingenuity of Eyetech which iallows such hardware compatability at all.
Having mastered the A1200 version, an A4000 version isn't so difficult but Eyetech have the word LTD at the end of them
- this means they are a company and thus work with the same business considerations as the rest of us in commerical
operation, namely we have to bring more money in in revenue that we pay out in development and production."
Looks like AmigaInc. is giving the ok for AmigaOS4.0 to run on CyberStormPPC and BlizzardPPC's now, and a few
companies are interested in doing the "Zico compatability layer". From another post: "I apologise if I did say that
because it isn't true 8-) We are very happy to talk, and indeed are talking to other companies who may wish to create
a Zico compatability layer so that OS4 runs on older PPC accelerators."
Will Mr. Fleecy Moss sell you a $99 A1200? He points out that is the cost of "a new A1200" is $99. Now where is that
store? :) From another post: "If you want to access all of your old apps though, an A1200 is recommended. Think of it
as just another PCI card - a new A1200 is what, $99 these days?"
Mr. Fleecy Moss and the Apple people, AmigaDE good for Apple. From another post: "Apple users are probably the least
technical, most content centric users in the computing market, so having a new content environment that runs
co-operatively on their existing systems can only be good news for them and for us."

iconified windows currently looks rather ugly. I tried to use SCA_OpenIconWindow() with the SCA_Iconify tag

7.4.2001 No more Zico projects for now, limited 'resources'
|
Fleecy Moss, Vice President of Product Development for AmigaInc posted on the amigaone ML:
"We announced the zico open specification - anyone can create a product to that specification. We then approached Eyetech and asked if they
would create a zico based product, and licence the AmigaOne name for that product. We also offered this to bPlan. Licencing the name costs,
but in return, it shows both the commitment of the company and it also matches to the internal Amiga resources. We only have enough resources
currently to work with two licencees, Eyetech and bPlan (if they ever reply). As we sell more and the market grows, we should be able to
support more products. It isn't necessary but it does give the customer a degree of confidence."

7.4.2001 Official AmigaOS 3.9 FAQ Updated (Again)
|
Greg Donner has updated his great Official Amiga OS3.9 FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions):
Added an entry to the Compatibility page,
and added standard GlowIcons for the AmigaGuide and HTML index file.
"Quite a few people have found that IBrowse 2.2 is actually more stable under OS 3.9, for some reason, than it was with previous OS versions. It's not
bug-free though, and hopefully this will be addressed in IBrowse 2.3, although the development state seems to be a bit "fragile" at the moment. Most
(if not all) of the common bugs in 2.2 have already been logged on the IBrowse bugtrack, so hopefully they will get fixed.
The External Viewers stopped working in OS3.5 BB2 and OS3.9, there is now unnoficial patch for IBrowse 2.2 (also fixes one of the most common crash
bugs), which can be found here."

A bug in multitasking that caused loss of performance has been removed.

4.4.2001 Reactions to AmigaInc's annoucements
|
Torsten Dudai's graphical interpretation of Fleecy's St. Louis explanations. :)
David 'zapek' Gerber, developer of Voyager 3, Shockwave Flash plugin, AmIRC plugins, and others
Vaporware progs answered 'Would you support Amiga"OS" 4.0.' question:
The arguments advanced by Amiga Inc during the St. Louis show make no sense. It's all bogus. [..]
I see no relationship between their views and the Amiga as I know it. Not even remotely.
I will support MorphOS, because it makes sense, it exists and is nicely done. And it's far more
than announcements, it's the real thing."

|
Starting at Q3/2001 DCE Computer Oberhausen will offer a G3/G4 PowerPC(r) based PCI card. The so
called "DCE Microserver G3/G4" will give you the complete functionality of a Server System. The

configurations for this machine to fit the users personal convenience. [..]
DCE MicroServer G3/G4, GREX 1200/4000 as well as the existing PPC board user base will be
supported by MorphOS. This will guarantee that Amiga users can use most of their software with
that system. In the near future there will be a JIT (Just in time) emulation included in MorphOS
that will allow execution times of 68K software far beyond current 68060 50MHz level even on the

4.4.2001 Amiga.org is currently experiencing technical difficulties.
|
Wayne Hunt: "As of Wednesday, 4 April at 11:00 am (GMT -6) Our ISP has removed our access to the
system's database because of excessive usage. This is understandable as we're on a low-cost,
"shared server solution", and we bear them no ill-regard. [..] In essence, this couldn't have
happened at a worse time, but on the bright side, we are currently in the process of locating

3.4.2001 Will Prometheus PCI card / PPC card combination be able to run OS4.0?
|
Q: Darrin01311@cs.com "Following the announcements made by Amiga Inc
at the Gateway2000 show with regard to OS4+ only running on zico compliant PCI systems, will your PCI
card/PPC card combination be able to run OS4.0?"
A: Grzegorz Juraszek, the Matay PR & Marketing: "We will make our best to make it compliant. I cannot
guarantee you that, as the G3 card is still in development. We undestand running AOS 4.0 will be a necessary
requirement for many people to buy our CPU card, yet we don't want to make promises we wouldn't be able to
fulfil in future. Besides, until at least a beta of OS4 is released, there is no certainty. The only solution
is to wait and see. Theoretically speaking - yes, it will run on Prometheus."

2.4.2001 Amiga.org Clarification
|
Wayne Hunt: "Amiga.org is currently down. This weekend we took over 2.5 million hits to the server,
and transferred over 40Gb in two days (mostly because of the Amiga 2001 pictures).
As a result, our ISP suspended our service due to scragging their MySQL server. That means for the
moment that Amiga.org will be unavailable until they either allow us back online, or I gather the
money to move to another ISP.
Simple fact of life, Amiga.org is once again a victim of it's own success (for which I humbly thank
you guys) and anyone who says the Amiga community is dead, obviously doesn't have to pay for it's
bandwidth... :) We'll be back soon I hope."
Latest News:
Amiga.org is now online again.
"In short, we will be working to minimize the site graphically and optimize the site's database,
but may, at any moment, be shut back down. We anticipate this, and are looking for a new host.
If you have any suggestions we need your help."

2.4.2001 What to expect in future AmigaOS versions
|
AmigaOS4.0 will be launched in the summer, with 4.2 and 4.5 coming out at six month intervals. OS5 will be late
next year.
Fleecy is giving specifications on what to expect
in future AmigaOS versions. A "brand new, written from scratch" TCP/IP stack, "Virtual Memory will come in OS4",
the "Amiga Component Model" will give resource tracking, OS5 will bring SMP, an "ACM and streaming system" will
bring a new datatypes system, "the Audio system will be the best of any system out there. [They] have 5 of the
best audio people in the world working on it." Closely-integrated 2D and 3D API are "already underway, and with
[their] close alliance with Matrox, there will be not only standard high level APIs but GLIDE like low level APIs
to really take advantage of Matrox cards". A new Workbench, an improved intuition.library will come in AmigaOS 4.5,
hardware-independancy and probably a new printer system in 4.2 and a new filesystem in 4.0.

1.4.2001 Another PCI option - Kolla Inc Solutions's 'Kolla PCI' expansion
|
Tired of PCI solutions that dont fit inside Your desktop A3000 or A4000 without using a chainsaw
on Your case? Wait no longer! Kolla Ink Solutions presents to You the Kolla PCI expansion that
fits inside Your Amiga and is fun to play with. Using one of the unused and obsolete ISA slots
as mount point it sits really well inside, unlike other solutions. You can even use Your old
Zorro cards as the PCI cards are opposite aligned, just like You can use PCI and ISA cards at
once in a PC. The PCI cards will not fit 100% in the brackets of Your Amiga, but fair not, they
will only stick out slightly more than a centimeter. The finished card will ship with a metal
grid You can fit in the original brackets, that will feature new brackets to support the new
position of the PCI cards, so it will all sit tight and not fall apart as You take Your Amiga
with You on tour. Read more

In cooperation with members of the C-64 scene, a clone of the popular Action Replay has been developed.
The refit has a 128K Flash instead of the 32K Eprom, and a 32K Ram instead of the 8K Ram. This way
it's possible to use the well-known Rom-versions of the Action Replay, as well as the Rom images of
Nordic Power and SuperSnapshot. The Freeze-logic has been improved a lot by a key-bounce elimination
and close monitoring of the CPU during system halt. The new cartridges will start shipping in june 2001.
