29.2.2k CeBit: Metabox on AmiJoe
Helmut Fuchs: "I spoke to a salesperson at one of the Met@box booths at the CeBit in Hannover today. When I asked her about news on the AmiJoe Card she said, that it would definetly see the light of day and the hardware is quite complete, but that the software is still not ready. She also told me that the only "approximate release date" she could tell me would be around end of march, because the hardware dept. doesn't get more specific about it, even to her. I think this is quite good news, don't you think? (despite of the fact, that on the glossy high quality AmiJoe-Flyer, that was on display there a release date of December `99 is mentioned)"

Ben Yoris reports that Elwood's unofficial AmiJoe card survey "has reached more than 500 entries. This is proving there's strong interest in G3/G4 for Amiga. The most popular comments deal with PCI/AGP gfx cards, G4 possibility and USB."

Oliver Wagner: "The main work is currently concentrating on furnishing Javascript support, and improving the plugin API. The good news in that respect is that Emmanuel Lesueur has adapted his Apdf PDF viewer as a V³ plugin, in the process of which he gave many helpful suggestions on the design of the plugin API.
VFlash has also received a major internal rewrite and is now several times faster than the previous version. The m68k versions are already working nicely, and Zapek is busy getting the PPC version done. We currently plan for a full new release within the next 2 weeks, although partial updates (image decoders, VFlash) might show up sooner." Read more

28.2.2k BGUI 41.10 Final release
Manuel: "Finally I have just uploaded the final release of BGUI 41.10.
This release consists basically a fixes of some of the remaining bugs that were still open. As you may see in the bug reporting pages, there are still a few known issues to be solved but we could no longer stall the final release of BGUI 41.10 until someone could fix them.
From now on consider this the final 41.10 release. An Aminet release will follow in the following days and will include the licensing text.
After this we will be working preparing BGUI to be developed as an Open Source project which will hopefully simplify the works to have it ported to AROS."

There are some problems with the Repulse mixer. There are two solutions: 1. remove the mixer (so no Amiga-Audio or CD-ROM input will be on the card). 2. use a different audio codec.

comfortable mixer with adjustable volume for every input
20 bit samples instead of 16 bit for playing
18 bit samples instead of 16 bit for recording
more inputs and it's possible to record from all inputs simultaniously
3D sound
The card will be cheaper with the new audio codec.

19.2.2k POKEMON Needs Your Help
Pokemon is coming to the Amiga, with Crystal Interactive Software obtaining a Licence to produce an Amiga game based on the Pokemon characters created by Nintendo.
However, Andrew Reed of Crystal Interactive Software has said that although they have a team of talented programmers, artists and musicians signed to develop the pc version, they don't have an Amiga team yet. CIS is therefore looking for programmers, artists and musicians to work on the Amiga development, with this a great opportunity for those people who have the necessary skills.
At this stage they do not know what style of gameplay the game will take, but they are looking for people with the ability to programme in C++ and also knowledge of 3D engines and Power PC. 2D and 3D artists preferably with a liking and ability to draw to Anime style Pokemon characters. The music needs to be in similar style to the Pokemon series.
If you're interested in the above positions, then e-mail Andrew Reed of Crystal Interactive Software.

18.2.2k AROS News
The partnership between the Open Amiga Foundation and AROS is now official (Read the press release). OAF will handle the public side (handle publicity) while AROS will concentrate all its energies on development.
To avoid infringing patents, the menu code for AROS has been changed. Menus now look more modern plus they open under the mouse (like a context menu). For the desperate, the old look is still available :-)
Also, Michael Schulz has committed a big chunk of code for AROS i386/native. There is now a VGA.HIDD, AROS can open a workbench screen. There are still some bugs to be ruled out, but it looks very promising.
Lastly for today, Stefan Berger has committed about 20 new applications from fish disks (cfn, aroach, windowtool, touch, shuffle, memomaster, memeter, lyr-o-mat, gooddouble, eval, egypt and memsnap). Some still don't do something useful but they show that porting apps to AROS is really simple.

16.2.2k Paraglide Status Report
VT: "ParaGlide - the 3D add-on module for PIV.
Thanks for your feedback! Two external layouters are working now on the ParaGlide PCB. We hope the layout is finished until 2000-03-16, in the middle of March. The following prototype production will take 3 weeks. If we are lucky and there are no errors in the PCB, these prototypes will be fully functional and the complete set of manufacturing data can be reused for mass production.
In this best case the mass production ParaGlides could start shipping end of April 2000.
But any errors in the first prototype PCB will cause a 3 to 4 weeks delay.
Thanks for your patience!"

10.2.2k More phase5
greenboy: "phase 5's insolvency should have very little impact on Phoenix or QNX plans. As it was, they were not able to proceed with their announced Amiga-oriented intentions. But Neutrino's hardware needs are in no way dependent on phase 5. So the only effect will be within a small portion of the public which still believes phase 5 is the keystone, when in fact it is not. The interviews I've done attempt to clarify those misperceptions and are reaching a large print and web readership. Whether phase 5 will be reborn under a different guise remains to be seen."

Ralph Schmidt wrote in comp.sys.amiga.misc: "The last Phase5's Amiga products are and will be continued by DCE." He also points out that he's not employed by Phase5, does not own any part of Phase5 and therefore is not responsible for any of this.

8.2.2k AROS News
There is progress on the AROS i386/native front. A very basic VGA.HIDD has been written plus some additional stuff (timer, trackdisk, etc).
Code for Menus has been comitted. Unlike on the Amiga, Menus are handled by a normal task which gets all input events as long as the user presses the right mousebutton. Therefore, menus don't block, they are very easily enhanced and the input handler is much more simple. And if blocking menus ever become an issue, this can added on a per-program basis by looking for RMB down/up.

7.2.2k New muFS
Multiuser is the continuation of the Multiuser Filesystem (muFS), and provides UNIX style security for AmigaOS - preventing people from accessing private/secret/sensitive files or deleting files they shouldn't. Multiuser was originally developed by Geert Uytterhoeven and is currently being maintained and developed by Wez Furlong, Johan Eriksson and Richard Smith. The current incarnation of Multiuser (version 1.8) has been around for some time, and does it's job very well. It does have a couple of inconsistencies with the rest of the UNIX world that make it a bit of a pain to cater for, if you are porting UNIX code. Multiuser 2 will remove these inconsitencies, and extend the multiuser system to integrate with networking software ...

4.3.2k Village Tronic Is Alive!
But they did not found the excellent hard- and software developers they were looking for in 1999. That means they had to concentrate the workforce they have on the top priority projects. Unfortunately, the ParaGlide is not a top priority.
The good news is that despite of these concentrations the ParaGlide project still has not been canceled, because the developers coming from the Amiga did reject to cancel it.
They are looking for a ParaGlide fan who is an experienced PCB layouter and uses the Protel layout system. The schematic is ready in Protel, and the positions of the connectors are fixed on the PCB. But the PCB has to be layouted, that means 8 EDO-DRAM 40pin, 1 PQFP240, 1 PQFP208, 1 QFP100 and some small stuff. If you are interested in helping the ParaGlide project, send email to their Amiga support. The software side is organized already.
