31.1.2001 Offical Picasso II(+)/IV mailinglist
Back in mid November 2000 Fred Fish (old Picasso ML owner at ninemoons.com) held a vote to see where the new Offical Picasso mailinglist would be located. 77% voted for sophisticated-development. ninemoons.com then was deactivated in the early part of December 2000. www.sophisticated-development.de is registered to Klaus Burkert (ex VillageTronic hardware guy) and Tobias Seiler is helping out and has setup the mailinglist. If you missed the results of the vote read the message from Mr. Fish below.

"The results are in, and after several recounts, the vote is 14 for Pavel's list and 49 for Tobias' list. So, sometime later today I will shutdown the picasso@ninemoons.com list and activate forwarding of picasso@ninemoons.com email to pml@sophisticated-development.de. The forwarding will only be temporary to give folks enough time to subscribe themselves to the new list of their choice." - "To subscribe to pml@sophisticated-development.de send an email to "Majordomo@sophisticated-development.de". A new special version of MooVId called Thrivx-MooVId for the new 3ivX codec is available here (this one is the CGFX fixed version).
NOTE: The current codecs available (3iv1 Delta 2) are still in a very early beta stage, the format is still under development and will change, the samples are only a demonstration of the high quality and compression this codec can achieve.
Speed in particular should improve dramatically, the codecs are not optimized as this is only for testing...

29.1.2001 Voodoo5 - Lack of docs - No Warp3D
Steffen Haeuser, who is on the Programming Staff at Hyperion Entertainment posted to Usenet (comp.sys.amiga.hardware) covering the subject "Re: PCI Opinions" had this to say: "Please note that due to lack of documentation there are *no* 3D Hardware Drivers for the Voodoo 5 !!! There are such (though not publicly released) Drivers for the Voodoo 3 though. The still slow busses won't profit from a Voodoo 5 more than from a Voodoo 3 though, so I suggest going for the Voodoo 3 (and this Chip definitely is MUCH faster than the Permedia 2 in the Cybervision/PPC, so it is DEFINITELY worth getting it... 3D Acceleration will not be the same again on your Amiga). Well, at the recent Amiga-show in Cologne the Warp3D Drivers for Voodoo 3 were shown (Heretic II and for a short time Wipeout 2097), and not only was it much faster, but also it LOOKED much better, as the Voodoo 3 supports some stuff in hardware which the Permedia 2 does not support. 29.1.2001 Warp3D V4 Info
On Hyperion's Latest Shogo progress page they have: "From the At the moment, our main field of work is the speed of the 3D output. To achieve this, we're currently working on Warp3D again, incorporating functionality that will later on become Warp3D V4:..." Many think that Hyperion is doing Warp3D now, including Eyetech Group Ltd.
This topic and "Warp3D to support hardware T&L" was brought up in a ann.lu thread. Hyperions's PR manager, Mr. Ben Yoris, he sets things stright: "I want to make it clear : though T&L is a future possibility of Warp3D, the Warp3D team has actually no plan for supporting the GeForce or the Radeon in the close future. The Frieden brothers explained why : lack of documentation. Moreover this is not Hyperion who's pushing Warp3D beyond its limits, this is the result of the hard work of the Warp3D team : Sam Jordan and the Frieden bros. I think this had to be set clear."
Thomas Frieden, one of the Warp3D authors had this to say on the subject: "Hi, What we are doing right now is the vertex arrays. This concept will later be expanded, so that vertex arrays may be in graphics ram, and are T&L'd before they are drawn. Right now, it's "only" a way to speed up the data throughput, as the actual move to the graphics chip registers is done in a tight loop, and the amount of register writes can be reduced..."

As fans of the format we are offering our time for free and also hope to raise some money for charity at the same time.
Currently European Amiga companies are starved of professional advertising opportunities. AmigaOne section of the Eyetech site opens!

GENERAL INFO
The AmigaOne 1200 & 4000 are 6xPCI + 1xAGP stand-alone G3/G4 boards capable of running the Amiga DE directly. These boards are designed to fit in Z4-busboard-compatible A1200 towers and Eyetech/Elbox/Power A4000 towers. However both AmigaOne boards can optionally connect to the appropriate Amiga motherboard for access to Classic Amiga chipset hardware. In this mode - because it has access to all the Classic Amiga custom chips - the AmigaOne 1200/4000 can also be used to run the Classic Amiga OS & software with a very high degree of compatibility. Read more

AMIGAONE TIMEFRAME
The AmigaOne is progressing to schedule, with AmigaOne 1200 boards being released to developers within a few weeks. Driver porting and software library writing are now underway, and Hyperion Software, who are porting the Warp-3D graphics drivers, have agreed to provide a games bundle with the AmigaOne to provide new purchasers with an instant demonstration of what the AmigaOne hardware - and their software - is capable of. Read more

BETATESTERS
Eyetech are looking for a limited number of beta-testers for the AmigaOne boards. Testers will be able to buy boards at a substantial discount, before anybody else (from the first production run). Any firmware / hardware updates subsequently found necessary to bring these boards up to full production specification will be carried out free of charge by Eyetech. Read more

There is now a mailing list at eGroups for the discussion and support of the AmigaOne 1200 / 4000 boards.

23.1.2001 There is a virus on Amiga Active CD 17
The file AACD17:AACD/Demos/Spoletium3/Demo/2.CamelKaos-Bombfire/CK-Bombfire.exe is infected with the DKG-Blum virus.
This virus is detected with version 33.24 of xvs.library, but that library wasn't released until two days after AACD17 was mastered. The previous version of xvs.library failed to pick up this virus.
We recommend you do not run this demo and apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. However, we hope you understand that we were unable to detect this virus with the tools available at the time.
As always, we check each CD before mastering, but cannot guarantee to be able to detect all forms of virus infection.

You can always find the latest antivirus programs and xvs.library on Virus Help Denmark Amiga page.

* bug fixing

At the moment, I did not compile it for the PPC so only a 68060 binary is available, I will make a PPC version in the following days. Future upgrade path is:
* parallel multitasking w/68K and PPC so that Intuition message handling does not slow GUI in PPC version
* complete locale support in dialog boxes (only partial at the moment)
* animation support (in the original Sculpt4D spirit)
* doc upgrade

* Added French Language support.
* Fixed many problems with extra long German text phrases.
* Added the missing F10 feature.
* Speech with Text is now fully bug-free and is a recommended mode. Remember that now the 'V' key will turn on/off Speech and the 'T' key will turn on/off Text.

19.1.2001 MASPlayer hardware MP3 player for any Amiga now in stock
Eyetech: "We are now stocking the first hardware MP3 player which operates with all Amigas from the A500 upwards. The MASPlayer uses the same high quality hardware decoder chip used by the award-winning Diamond Rio MP3 players.
It plugs into the parallel port, has a 3.5mm mini stereo output jack and draws its power from a pass-through connector on the serial port. In use it makes very low demands on the CPU as it is only requiring the spooling of relatively low volumes of data from hard drive or CDROM to the Amigas parallel port.
The MASPlayer supports all bitrates (including variable bitrates) when used with an '020 CPU or above and gives excellent sound quality. It's ideal for turning your old Amiga into a sophisticated MP3 player, or simply as an addon to your existing configuration.
The MASPlayer is available to buy online right now for just £69.95 inc. VAT."

WarpBMP.datatype v44.1 - freeware BMP picture datatype (68k,PPC/WarpOS,PPC/MorphOS)
WarpBMP.datatype is a datatype which allows you to view and read Windows or OS/2 BMP image files. A unique feature of this particular BMP datatype is that in addition to supporting the 68k (with optimized versions for 020, 030, 040 and 060), it also supports the PowerPC processor, with native WarpOS and MorphOS versions. Even better, it is fast, compact, clean and well behaved - a true plug'n'play PPC datatype. One of the key features is its superior speed, hence the name WarpBMP. This datatype uses the same engine as used by my other WarpDTs.

Frogger v1.64b2, fast MPEG video player, with MPEG-2 layer support for AMIGAs with fast 68k CPUs (68040/60) or PowerPC equipped systems. 68k and PPC (WaroOS and PowerUp) executables can be downloaded there.

15.1.2001 PowerPC 7450: New G4 cpu!
"Despite bearing a model number close to that of the PowerPC 7400, the 7450 chip sports a brand-new architecture. Motorola designed the 7450 chip with higher clock speeds in mind and added a number of tricks to boost overall performance."
"The most important design feature is a longer pipeline. By lengthening the pipeline, a structure that prepares instructions to be processed, a chipmaker can boost the processor's clock speed. The longer pipeline, "really lets us turn up the clock and the performance," Wilke said."
"Motorola upped the PowerPC 7450 design to seven pipeline stages from the four used in its PowerPC 7400 chip. As a result, the company got a 233-MHz boost in clock speed, initially, and will likely see more jumps in the future. The chip saw "a significant increase in clock speed, but more importantly, it's a significant increase in doing real work," Wilke said."
"The chip is available in four new clock speeds, ranging from 466 MHz to 733 MHz. Cupertino, Calif. -based Apple is now taking orders on Macintosh desktops with 466-MHz and 533-MHz PowerPC 7450 chips." Read more

14.1.2001 Elbox answering...
Elbox has answered a few questions dealing with Voodoo3 and TV/Overlay stuff brought up by Mr. Abt "Hack" responce. Read the ELBOX complete "Hack" responce Q&A here.

Voodoo3 1.2 driver from Elbox out Monday or Tuesday.

Why there are no 100Mbit DMA NIC drivers?
Tobias Ab wrote: "The reason is that all publically available 100 Mbit chips need to do DMA to the system memory which is AFAIK not possible with the Mediator."
Darek Dulian, Elbox: "No, this is not true. There are no technical problems whatsoever with MEDIATOR PCI working with the Ethernet 100 Mbit cards operating solely in the DMA mode. As an example of a PCI device working in the DMA mode in MEDIATOR, we presented a TV tuner card based around the BT848 processor in the WOA 2000 fair."

ShowConfig broken?
Tobias Abt: "Funny that they also use the manufacturer ID of another company. Is there anything they do themselves and could take credit for it? :-))"
Darek Dulian, Elbox: "Yes. We take credit for everything that we do. And you may be sure that whatever we do is ALWAYS fully compliant with the law. Our lawyer consultants take care to make all our activities legally flawless. Manufacturer ID Number 2206 was granted to the Elbox company by Commodore International Services Corporation in 1994. We do not take responsibility for mistakes in software, which has not been authored by us. 14.1.2001 ANN: Advertisers needed
Christian Kemp: "In a recent MOTD, I stated that the advertiser situation was bad, but I didn't expect to make less than 5$ in 13 days. So I decided to pull the only remaining advertisement banner, but I am hoping to find an alternative means of at least covering my online cost (various virtual servers, phone bill, etc.). I haven't given up the hope that Amiga companies (Amiga, Haage&Partner, and many others) will finally understand that the market would be even less alive without Amiga news sites, and finally decide to make suitable contributions to the news sites they've been using for years to post their press releases and announce their products on."

The most important feature of the new developers system is the step forwards towards the new AmigaOS. At the moment everything still runs on the Classic Amiga, and that is how it will be presented, but everything was developed anew with easy portability in mind. Read more

12.1.2001 Offical P96 V3 drivers coming!
P96 author had this to say, on the Amiga-Mediator ML, about a question refering to VGR's 10-Jan-01 post on how the ELBOX BT848 TV Drivers are over a fourtene night late.
"I am not Robert, but maybe I can explain... For something more than just the hack that they showed on the WOA, they need to implement functions in their Voodoo driver to use the display overlay. This information they do not have, because it is not in our DDK which they do not have either (at least from us). Trying to understand what has to be done by resourcing the PicassoIV driver is probably not sufficient and certainly a pain in the ass to do. And this will be a waste of time for them to do because once our own driver will be ready, nobody will want to use theirs anyway. I can promise that our driver will be much better overall. Ok, we can not speed up blitter functions they already use, but the rest will be much better. PIP features will certainly be supported by our driver (maybe not in the first release, but...). (The hack they showed so far was that they simply blasted the TV data into the screen bitmap which is completely inacceptable for real use, because of screen trashing and lack of system conformity.)"

12.1.2001 Eternity News: MPG Video-card / USB for AMIGA
Eternity: "We are looking for some developers for the realising of an MPEG-Video-card or a USB-card for the Amiga in co-operation with Kato Development: Programmers that develop drivers and host programs, based on Linux-sources, for the Amiga. We consider the following suppositions:
The intention to develop something 'New' for the Amiga.
There has to be some time available.
You have to know that you wont become a millionaire by developing for the Amiga.
Will for co-operation.
C and C++
Know about the Amiga-hardware.
With the knowhow of Kato and some other persons we will try to develop one of the above mentioned products. We make no promises!
Additionally we are looking for distributors that would like to support the investment and will get better conditions.
And last but not least we would like to come in contact with other projects of this kind, cause if there are already projects like this running, we will renounce ours.

WarpJPEG.datatype v44.15 - freeware JFIF-JPEG picture datatype (68k,PPC/WarpOS,PPC/MorphOS). Changes:
* Recoded much of the startup code, with libraries now not being opened on the ramlib context (after advice from H&P)
* Modified internal structure of the WarpOS version, to totally safeguard against cache conflicts (may have been causing rare random crashes)
* All WarpOS benchmarks recomputed, since WarpOS V5 is a little bit faster than V4 (this datatype is upto 5% faster as a result)
* Added benchmarks for MorphOS
* Unfortunately, due to all the internal changes, the 68k version is now a little bit slower (only about 1%) than before

WarpPNG.datatype v44.9 - freeware PNG picture datatype (68k,PPC/WarpOS,PPC/MorphOS). Changes:

* Modified internal structure of the WarpOS version, to totally safeguard against cache conflicts (may have been causing rare random crashes)
* Changed floating point usage of the 68k versions - the 040 and 060 version now use the FPU directly, while the 020 and 030 versions continue to use the mathieee libs (in a safer manner than before)
* All WarpOS benchmarks recomputed, since WarpOS V5 is a little bit faster than V4 (this datatype is a bit faster as a result)
* The 68k versions are now fractionally faster than before
* Added benchmarks for MorphOS

8.1.2001 Amiga Survivor
Amiga Survivor is a well established Amiga magazine, originally published by Robert Iveson as a paid-for games publication. CS&E set up a media division to relaunch the magazine and continue in the Amiga market. With the alleged financial difficulties of Amiga,Inc and lack of information or support from them it is now only viable for the magazine to continue with the support of other companies in this market, since we made a decision this week not to rejoin the Amiga market for the AmigaDE. While we do not want to abandon a sinking ship, it really is up to the companies involved to show they are professional enough to advertise. I've enclosed a bit of a poem at the end which illustrates my point! Read more

4.1.2001 Tube Pre Amp: energy maximizer with realtime vacuum-tube emulation
Tube Pre Amp is a new plugin for ProStationAudio (any version). It allows to increase the signal loudness up to 15dB without introducing digital clipping.
The legendary warmth of tube-based devices (as opposed to solid state devices) is well know. The basic cause of the difference in tube and solid state sound is the weighting of harmoninc distortion components. When saturating, tubes gently compress the signal, producing an harmonic series that falls off quickly in amplitude at higher frequencies.
Another positive effect of tubes is that, due to asymmetrical saturation (the positive half of a waveform saturates differently than the negative half), the harmonic series generated by soft clipping contains only musically healthy even harmonics (octaves and well-intoned intervals), as opposed to dissonant odd harmonics. This plugin implements both of the above features.

4.1.2001 S-FILE 8: HAPPY HOLIDAYS
Firstly, our end of year sale is over. It seems you guys liked the delayed payment option, so we might have it again later in the year.
Secondly, this is very important -- UK distributor CS&E bought all of our remaining stock of the original Capital Punishment and Quake. So, we do not have any more of these two fine games, and they will not be manufactured anymore. If you wish to buy them, please contact CS&E, who plan to have them for sale in UK and Ireland stores.
And finally, we are working on a few new licencing agreements for some major conversions. More news as soon as it's all ready. :)
Happy Holidays, and a great new 2001!

3.1.2001 It's Offical, OFFICAL Voodoo P96 drivers by P96 Crew
Mr. Tobias Abt posted to the Amiga-Mediator ML today: "Yes. There will be a genuine Picasso96 driver for Mediator. I can't give a date right now, but there will be one. Although there are only a handful of registrations right now... What are you waiting for?"

If they have a "handfull" of registrations after only 2 weeks (say 10), and need 300 as stated to do the project... It will take about 60 weeks at this rate to hit the needed 300. Is Mid-February 2002 the release date? Did the P96 team get a early Christmas present from Poland? Now there will be 3 different Voodoo drivers, will a 4th show up now?

2.1.2001 Silversurfer does NOT Work with Melody1200
Joern Plewka: "Since the Cologne fair previous to this year's fair the Silversurfer in it's original state doesn't work correctly with Melody1200 since the complete clockport is blocked, which is in contradiction with what the manufacturer states at his homepage. This information isn't even available to users when they ask for support. Katodev is fed up with fixing Silversurfers without complaining, by now. Currently it seems that even the software does NOT work with Melody1200 anymore.
If Silversurfer and Melody1200 can't work together simultaneoulsy it means that Melody can die from bus-collisions, sooner or later. Please get a guaranty on purchase that Silversurfer does the things you require or use Twister1200. This makes you preventing a lot of anger, port and time for you and us.
We have reconstructed the layout of the Silversurfer now. This shows that the IRQ runs over a diode. Those having problems due to this "trick" should replace the diode by a transistor (e.g. BS170)."

JST v4.3b - JOTD startup for HD installs & degrader. Memory leak bugfix existing from v4.2c

Word8-Filter - text import filter for Soft-Logik's DTP program PageStream. It allows you to load the main text of Word8 documents (Word97-Word2000) into a PageStream article.
AmigaWriter-Filter - import filter for Soft-Logik's DTP program PageStream. It consists of two parts: The text filter inserts the main flowtext of your AmigaWriter documents into the current PageStream article with most of its text formattings. The document filter loads your AmigaWriter documents as if they were native PageStream documents, retaining as much of your original document as possible.
