30.12.99 QUAKE News
|
According to Daniel J. Andrea II, the "official" free Quake that is being worked on is
almost ready! At least regular Quake is, and there will be 68K, PowerUP and WarpUP versions
of it. Plus they are trying to keep the resultant source code as compiler independent as
possible. But, they have some snags to work out in the QuakeWorld server and client
versions. There are some map consistency checks that aren't working right that they have
to iron out yet. But it won't be too long! :-)

28.12.99 The end of Amazing Computing Magazine
|
Harv Laser: "It's my sad duty to report to you that the venerable Amazing Computing magazine, the
oldest surviving North American glossy commercial publication devoted to the Amiga computer, has
shut its doors and declared bankruptcy. Amazing, published by PiM Publications and edited by
Don Hicks, has been an anchor and a mainstay in the Amiga Community since its first issue in
1985. It was the first Amiga monthly, and, through a longand tortured history of Amiga magazines
coming and going, into and out of business, it has turned out to be the last.. for now, anyway."

26.12.99 Common PPC QUAKE Port Effort!
|
In order to get a clean, complete and fast Quake PPC port coordination is needed. It is strongly
adviceable to unite effort and not doing the same work many times by different authors. Steffen
Haeuser is offering cooperation and his email address for coordination to unite this wonderfull
effort and get the best possible Quake Port instead of half a dozen with this or that quirk.
Steffen points out that his version is pretty advanced but there are many missing pieces which
are not yet implemented and cooperation would be more than welcome on this unfinished parts:
Sound (CD Audio is already done, only Sound FX are missing) Support for Hires
(currently only 320x200 is supported) Network support (already works if the Amiga is the
Server, but if it is the Client it does not yet work) And QuakeWorld+Warp3D Support are
still missing, it is only "normal Quake" and Software Rendering currently
Interested coders for this kind of coordinated effort can contact
Steffen Haeuser.

the revival of stalled or abandoned projects, which could be continued by a team of open-source Amiga programmers.

21.12.99 Heretic II News
|
New screenshots from Amiga version
of Heretic II. You can still
preorder your HereticII copy for only DM89.-
Little nugget o' news on the Warp3D mailing list (courtesy of Thomas Frieden): "We've just built
our first version of Heretic2 with our MiniGL. Heretic 2 does up to 35 frames (depending on the level)
per second in 640x480, and up to 70 fps (peak performance, of course) in 320x240, so I would guess
GLQuake would really fly on this combination. And the limiting factor is the Permedias fill rate, if you
measure a normal level at a stamp sized screen, we get 112 fps, so the computational power is sufficient
to process a lot of geometry, and the MiniGL is currently unoptimized, always using the full pipeline.
From our test with StormMesa, we found out that it's approximately half the speed of MiniGL, so even
that would be possible. Remember that at higher resolutions, the fill rate is the limiting factor..."

15.12.99 Freespace: The Great War for Amiga.
|
Hyperion is pleased to announce it has acquired a license from Interplay
to port Volition's best-selling space-combat simulator "(Descent) Freespace: The Great War" to the Amiga.
System-requirements include PPC processor (WarpOS), graphics-card (AGA under review) and 32 MB RAM with full
support of 3D accelerators through Warp3D. A 68060 version is not ruled out but would most likely require 3D
acceleration. Confirmed members of the programming team include Hans-Joerg Frieden and Christian Sauer. The
game is tentatively slated for release early Q2 2000 and will be published by
Titan Computers.

14.12.99 Source Codes
|
John Haubrich, author of well known MUI class TreeList, is probably leaving Amiga and so he decided upload
selected source codes to his source code page.
John: "If Amiga still had good developer tools, I'd stick around. I'd complete these projects (especially
TreeList and OOGA). But the future looks bleak. Although I would like to see AROS running on a Playstation
2!!! Anyway, someone please download the TreeList source on the Amiga Software page and finish it.
It only needs image support and MCP configurability. Everything else is done."

|
The third beta is here (source and

"Since last time, I've rewritten the PPC handling code, added 16 bit DSP echo and implemented the hifi
mixing routines in m68k assembler. I forgot to update the README file in the source archive. Just
ignore the information regarding the second beta release. There are a couple of known bugs in the PPC
code, but the random lockups should be gone now. If not, let me know. The performance under WarpUp is
terrible, but I have no idea why yet. The PowerUp version seems to work much better."

11.12.99 New Image Engineer plug-in
|
VISUAL BORDER grows and splits as 2 separate plug-ins. VISUAL ALPHA is that new plug-in. It allows you
to create grey alpha masks, which you, after once calculated, can keep and composite with other images
later. For people, who are not familiar with alpha masks; Think about a stamp or actually it's edges.
This plug-in can create you a stamp shaped image and mask with smooth edges. You can then composite it
to a bigger image. Ofcourse there are other more complex effects, than simple edge effects. This could
be great tool for one, who is creating graphics for video.

11.12.99 New AmiGenerator
|
New version (1.10 991211) of AmiGenerator, Sega
MegaDrive/Genesis emulator, is now available.
68k version has been temporarly (?) dropped. The main reason for making this decision is that this version (due
to the Z80 emu being added) is quite slow even on PPC Amigas, and would surely be unusable on 68k ones unless
Z80 emulation (and thus the sound) was removed.
