30.12.99 QUAKE News
According to Daniel J. Andrea II, the "official" free Quake that is being worked on is almost ready! At least regular Quake is, and there will be 68K, PowerUP and WarpUP versions of it. Plus they are trying to keep the resultant source code as compiler independent as possible.
But, they have some snags to work out in the QuakeWorld server and client versions. There are some map consistency checks that aren't working right that they have to iron out yet. But it won't be too long! :-)

28.12.99 The end of Amazing Computing Magazine
Harv Laser: "It's my sad duty to report to you that the venerable Amazing Computing magazine, the oldest surviving North American glossy commercial publication devoted to the Amiga computer, has shut its doors and declared bankruptcy.
Amazing, published by PiM Publications and edited by Don Hicks, has been an anchor and a mainstay in the Amiga Community since its first issue in 1985. It was the first Amiga monthly, and, through a longand tortured history of Amiga magazines coming and going, into and out of business, it has turned out to be the last.. for now, anyway." Read more.

26.12.99 Common PPC QUAKE Port Effort!
In order to get a clean, complete and fast Quake PPC port coordination is needed. It is strongly adviceable to unite effort and not doing the same work many times by different authors. Steffen Haeuser is offering cooperation and his email address for coordination to unite this wonderfull effort and get the best possible Quake Port instead of half a dozen with this or that quirk. Steffen points out that his version is pretty advanced but there are many missing pieces which are not yet implemented and cooperation would be more than welcome on this unfinished parts:
Sound (CD Audio is already done, only Sound FX are missing)
Support for Hires (currently only 320x200 is supported)
Network support (already works if the Amiga is the Server, but if it is the Client it does not yet work)
And QuakeWorld+Warp3D Support are still missing, it is only "normal Quake" and Software Rendering currently

Interested coders for this kind of coordinated effort can contact Steffen Haeuser.

21.12.99 Heretic II News
New screenshots from Amiga version of Heretic II. You can still preorder your HereticII copy for only DM89.-
Little nugget o' news on the Warp3D mailing list (courtesy of Thomas Frieden): "We've just built our first version of Heretic2 with our MiniGL. Heretic 2 does up to 35 frames (depending on the level) per second in 640x480, and up to 70 fps (peak performance, of course) in 320x240, so I would guess GLQuake would really fly on this combination. And the limiting factor is the Permedias fill rate, if you measure a normal level at a stamp sized screen, we get 112 fps, so the computational power is sufficient to process a lot of geometry, and the MiniGL is currently unoptimized, always using the full pipeline.
From our test with StormMesa, we found out that it's approximately half the speed of MiniGL, so even that would be possible. Remember that at higher resolutions, the fill rate is the limiting factor..."

6.12.99 Amiga supplement to magazine is gone.
Monitor magazine, an online magazine with an Amiga section (Amiga.info), will no longer be including the Amiga section in future editions (one of the last places you could find Amiga info in the mainstream press). This issue is the last (they say they don't get many hits and that software developers don't send them anything to review...). They had been hoping for a place in the print version of the magazine but that now seem highly unlikely.

5.12.99 SoundProbe 3 News
Soundprobe Team: "Thanks again to everyone that has e-mailed so far, we're now around 80, the e-mails seem to have dropped to a trickle now, so let others know. I'll be putting up a list here, and finally getting the Amiga Soundprobe pages sorted, I'll add a direct link so you don't need to go via the PC section, also I'll add a page to allow you to vote on features for Soundprobe V3 ;)
Please be patient, I'm sorry if things move a little slow, and I take time to reply to e-mails, I run the Amiga side myself, and have to share my time between the PC version and trying to finish my degree! I will get there, expect the V3 update around Feb/March 2000. More details to follow within the next week (or 2)."

2.12.99 SoundProbe 3 ...looks better
Soundprobe Team: "HUGE thanks for everyone that has e-mailed, over 60 people e-mailed in the last 2 days. Please don't stop, altough this means plans are now in progress, no work will start until we get to the 100 or more mark, please keep it going, let all SP users, let the world know we're back! The more people that e-mail, the more likely future updates are! Keep it going, Amiga users are the tops! :)
Thanks to all that have offered help/support, I WILL get around to replying as soon as I have a list of what will be in the new SP so I can start working on bug fixes and new bits (e.g. AHI - so SP can properly use soundcards), improved fx (like reverb and vocoder), features from the PC version (Colour Time graph) and hopefully I can port the new virtual mem from the PC version which handles over 2GB editing and 32-bit support. I'll see about cleaning up the GUI too. Keep the ideas coming, I'll get a full list up here start of Jan 2000, I expect release Feb/March depending on the e-mail reponse, so far so good."
