31.12.2k Pisti V1.01
Pisti (pronounced "pishti") is a popular Turkish card game, using a standard 52 card pack. It is normally played by four people in partnerships, partners sitting opposite. The direction of play is anticlockwise. Cards are played to a central pile, which can be captured by matching the previous card played or playing a jack. Points are scored for certain captured cards. The word "pisti", which means "cooked", describes a capture of a pile containing only one card, for which extra points are scored.

31.12.2k Pegase 1.86 (No FPU version)
Someone asked me today to compile a non-FPU version for 68020/68030 users. I did it and you'll find the archive there (executable only). Pegase is Amiga 68k/PPC MPEG-Encoder (Layer 1&2).
WARNING: I've checked this version with a small sample file (2 minutes long) and it's damn slow : more than 35 minutes to encode the sample (running on 68060/50). The 68030/FPU version takes 6'10 and Pegase 060 requires 3'54 to encode the same sample. All these versions use the FPU in some way or another (direct access, via emulation, or via the mathieee#? libraries). Last but not least, the resulting MPEG file differ when compared to the others (3 bytes are different, probably due to an approximative compliance of the mathieee#? libraries).

30.12.2k Important Message From Warp3D Authors: JUST VOODOO3
Thomas Frieden: "Recently, I'm getting mails from people telling me that they bought a specific graphics card, and are now waiting for us to do a Warp3D driver. I would like to say the following:
*********************************************************************************
For now, the Voodoo 3 is the only PCI card that we plan to support. So please, do NOT go out and buy either a Voodoo 4, Voodoo 5, GeForce, GeForce 2, Matrox G450, TNT, TNT2, BitchingFast 3D or whatever.

CHANCES ARE YOU SPEND A LOT OF MONEY FOR NOTHING.
*********************************************************************************
We will NOT support any board we can't get documentation of. And we will NOT build 3D drivers based on Linux source code. No one of the Warp3D team does have any time to wade through megabytes of source code to find out the bits we need, nor the intent to try.
I would think it's common sense to ask before buying something that might not be supported, but the mails I get recently show me otherwise."

29.12.2k Picasso96 Driver for Mediator
Tobias Abt: "Sufficient demand for Picasso96 drivers for Mediator provided, that is about 300 registered users (specify Mediator for purpose when registering), in case of need we will purchase a complete developer- and test-system with our own funds, and then create own drivers for diverse PCI graphics boards. This drivers will then be of quality known form us.

But Elbox mentioned to us that they already would have shipped two systems to Germany for other driver development (CGX). Well, it would be in our terms to provide us one of these. To charge UPS with delivery cannot cost the world...

Another problem would be accessing the API of the Mediator system's pci.library. Elbox provides this only for NDA, though they don't feel themselves to be bound to such concinnities, see their unauthorized Voodoo3-P96 driver... If they would refuse us to access this, of course this would raise a certain problem which could lead to slightly delays."

Tobias Abt: "Afterwards we got the information that this developer system provided to the CGX team was distributed by Vesalia, but financed by Elbox."

22.12.2k Aminet Size Near 20GB And 70000 Files
P-O Yliniemi: "Aminet is getting closer to a size of 20GB and 70000 files every day now... Using one of my programs written a couple of years back (AIS) on the INDEX file from WUArchive, I got the following result: 69078 files, 19099.6 MB (20-Dec-2000)!
I don't know if anyone has some plans for this special moment, but I think it's at least worth mentioning on this news page. By the time I wrote 'AIS', there was about 25500 files, using near 4GB of disk space (7-Feb-96).

22.12.2k No Panic!
Mr.Steffen Haeuser from Hyperion posted his views on ANN, on the 3dfx sell out. "Hi! To clear up some things:
- Amiga Hardware Dealers have bought significant quantities of Voodoo 3 Boards AFAIK, to be able to bundle them with G-Rex and Mediator
- Even if no Product support anymore rest stocks will be available. Like any product PC dealers will sell 3dfx Boards as long as there is still demand for it, they won't throw existing stock to the garbage bin, do not fear
- Did you really expect to get support from 3dfx even if they WOULD continue the Boards, if you contact them "I have problems with the Voodoo Board on my Amiga ?
- Until the time when no 3dfx Boards are there anymore there will be other Drivers available, I am sure of this. But the current situation does not mean *any* serious for the Amiga. All of you will get all the Voodoo 3/4 Boards you want, I promise you... I know the Amiga Community always had a great capacity for panicking, but this incident really shows no need for panicking
- BTW: TNT 2 is not really an option, as nVidia are *very* secretive about information on their Chipsets... but there are other alternatives of VERY modern chips... but for the current technical solutions (Mediator and G-Rex) Voodoo 3 is just fine. I will get a Voodoo 3 Board myselves for running our games on it."

22.12.2k Voodoo News
Elbox has answered a few questions dealing with "bugs" with their Voodoo3 driver. Read the complete bug Q&A.

CyberGraphX is now running on the fastest Voodoo card you can buy! The CGX drivers are up and running on the duel VSA-100 chip Voodoo5 5500 PCI in the G-REX. This completes the Voodoo series currently. CGX now supports the Voodoo3 2000/3000, Voodoo4 4500 and Voodoo5 5500.

3dfx announced today that they have signed a definitive agreement with Nvidia to sell to them most of 3dfx's assets. With this agreement it has also been announced that 3dfx will discontinue techincal support after Feb. 15th. "Concidering the nature of this product, we feel that continuing to provide this product to our customers will jeopardize their satisfaction with both BBY and the product long term."

22.12.2k More About New Amiga Trojan
Modem/Darkage: "I would like to report that the recent trojan advert, in the file Dkg-Blum.lha, has nothing to with Darkage (demo group). It's a fake production and none of Darkagers knew about it. From http://scene.darkage.it you can read: "ShaneTheWolfTheDog" has released a very LAME TROJAN as a darkage intro. If you see DKG-Blum.lha anywhere, please DO NOT download it. 21.12.2k Amiga Extreme On Ice
Stefan Falk: "Amiga Extreme will be closing for a while. This is because I feel that I don't have the motivation to continue the site, and the fact that there's almost nothing to post, I don't see much of a point in updating. There are better sites for that (Amiga.org and Czech Amiga News for example).
Once again, this is not the end, it's just the end for Amiga Extreme on the classic platform. The next time Amiga Extreme will open is when the AmigaONE release is closing in on us and when there's some real news for the new platform. 21.12.2k 300+ Mediator Owners Needed For Offical P96 Voodoo3 Driver?
Mr. Kjeldsen via Amiga-Mediator ML: "I don't like to write this, which comes from an email from Alexander Kneer. He wrote this 10 days ago about the Elbox and P96 at WOA-issue: (this is not the whole mail, so I hope I didn't leave out the context)" - "If thing do not change completely, we might have a last option for Mediator users who want P96 support: If more than (let's say) 300 (potential) owners of a Mediator+Voodoo solution send us a e-mail that they are willing to register P96, we will add a Mediator/Voodoo3 driver to a upcoming distribution. Maybe that sounds reasonable. If all went wrong and we didn't reach that figure, we would have to keep all Mediator based graphics hardware from working with P96 and send the registrations for Mediator+P96 (one so far) back."

20.12.2k New Amiga Trojan Found
Jan Andersen, VHD: "Today we recived a new 'lame' trojan. This trojan will only execute it self if you have named your hard-disk "DH0" & "DH1". The trojan is spread in and archive with the name "DKG-BLUM.LHA". If you run the "DKG-BLUM.exe", the trojan will replace your c:loadwb with another loadwb (size: 3560 bytes) and replace c:assign with another assign (size: 2408 bytes), and the screen will tell you that there is not enough memory, and will have to restart, then it looks you like the trojan will delete DH1:. The trojan also adds or replaces 2 other files, "LIBS:asi.library" & "DEVS:ASI.device".
The cure right now (If you have lost your DH1: to bad...), then replace the trojan files with clean ones, here is the trojan sizes:
c:loadwb (3560 bytes)
c:assign (2408 bytes)
libs:asi.library (24548 bytes - delete if you dont have clean file)
devs:asi.device (2408 bytes - delete if you dont have clean file)

Here is some info about the infected archive:

Archive name.. : dkg-blum.lha

MS: "Below you will find 3 screen shots that we grabbed today from iFUSION. These were grabbed on an A4000 using the "developer" PPC card. This card is a 150Mhz 603e with 32 bit memory (not 64). It is the absolute worst case in terms of performance. It runs rather well! We were able to run a variety of programs that tested performance and PPC compatibility. We have not found a single application that fails to run under this emulation! screenshot 1., screenshot 2., screenshot 3..

14.12.2k Simon The Sorcerer II Update
Since the Simon The Sorcerer II launch on WoA last weekend two updates were released.
Update 2 (14th December 2000) Improved Locale/Language loading. Locale loading is more than 10 times faster. This cuts approx 5 seconds from the game startup and makes in-game Locale change almost instant. This also avoids some potential animation glitches that can occur when switching language. This is obviously not something that is done often but the 5 second speed-up at start is still good. Changed the ASL code in another attempt at solving Requester issues with OS 3.9 and some other versions of ASL Library.
Update 1 (12th December 2000) Added Sound cache to improve performance in scenes where the same sounds are reused frequently. Improved keyboard input by using Queued input system. Now keys are guaranteed to be caught. Attempted to fix a ASL requester problem which makes Saving an Loading impossible with some versions of ASL library.

14.12.2k Heretic II running with hardware-accelerated on Voodoo3
At WoA 2000 Hyperion was showing Heretic II on a Voodoo3 + G-REX + CGX + Warp3D setup. Mr. Hans-Jörg Frieden posted this on www.ann.lu: "Yes, Heretic II was running hardware-accelerated. The resoultion it was running on was 640x480. In that resolution I got 41 FPS on a PPC604/180 in tutorial2, and 64 FPS in 320x240. Actually things will get a lot faster when the drivers are finished, since I'm not using the second texture unit, and no command pipeline interface which will also speed things up considerably. The driver as presented on the show was the work of one and a half week of almost sleepless nights :-)"

14.12.2k AmigaAmp: Streaming far from being perfect
Thomas Wenzel: "Seems as if my first shoutcast streaming implementation needs major rework and optimizations before it works smoothly. At the moment all you can do is set PlayBuf to 1s and LoadBuf to 16k. This should work for medium to fast links. On slow links however (below ISDN speed) you might be unlucky. I'll fix it! :)
If you're using the WarpUP decoding engine, please increase AmigaAMP's stack to at least 262144 bytes as well."

13.12.2k ELBOX - P96 v1.43b - Speed Tests
Another note on using v1.43b P96 with Voodoo3 + Mediator. Mr. Kanning posted some info on the Amiga-Mediator mailing list: "I asked Elbox on WOA2k what the problem could be of my first installation. You know already the story about the 100% compatibility with 1.43b instead of 2.0. They told me that they've done that, because not every Amiga user has acces to the internet (especially in Poland). Picasso1.43 came with AmigaOS3.5 CD. And there are some bugs in 2.0 so thing might change for all Picasso2.0 lovers, because (boingbag_1 and ) AmigaOS3.9 includes Picasso2.0." 12.12.2k AROS News
11.12.2000 Stefan Berger has commited a completely rewritten layers.library which is much faster and much more simple then the one we had. It's now based on OO techniques, much easier to extend (we're currently thinking about child layers and layer groups which will keep their stacking order). Also, the new layers.library allows to move windows outside the screen (the first windows have already been lost out there ;-)
Georg Steger committed additional files for ReqTools which should make it compile on Amiga.
Adam Chodorowski began the work on workbench.library and the workbench process.

9.12.2000 Johan Alfredsson improved the ReqTools file requester. The Volume requester works now.

6.12.2000 Michael Schulz committed a PS/2 Mouse.HIDD and removed the respective code in the keyboard handler.
Adam Chodorowski implemented the Intuition-Functions OpenWorkbench() and CloseWorkbench(). LockPubScreen() will now open the workbench if it isn't already open.

11.12.2k Major New ICS Upgrade V2.00
ICS is the free AmigaOS scanner color calibration software. ICS allows color calibrating basicly any scanner using scanner calibration photos (targets). Standard IT 8.7/2 (ISO 12641), various Corel and Epson targets are supported. The software can work independent of any Amiga scanner drivers, but works best with scanner software directly calling ICS for you (ScanQuix V4 or V5, ScanTrax, ImageFX).
Following new features have been added to V2 of ICS:
Now all ICS image reading and writing is done using the new IRW library
ICSConvert can now write JPEG, IFF, and TIFF
ICSConvert and ScanTarget now support 16 bit/channel image data
ICSConvert can now read/write embeded ICC color and IPTC/NAA editorial information
Now includes tools to extract ICC and IPTC information from images (IFF, TIFF, JPEG, PNG)
Spanish localization added
ICSConvert can now be used as tool for image format conversion
IRW does offer improved and localized error handling. Error requesters now offer detailed information, hints and often also a Retry function
Major speed improvement for loading certain files formats. Also, memory requirement was reduced

Thanks to Sigbjørn Skjæret, Brian Donahue and Marius Schwarz for their help. Both features are still experimental and not fully implemented yet. The rest of AmigaAMP v2.8 is finished however. 9.12.2k ACSYS Canceled
After a last telephone call with programmer it is now official that the development of ACSYS (Turrican-clone) will be canceled. In our opinion for 86 interested people (result of a opinion poll) it is not worthy continuing the development.
If the development will be continued by a third person the following applies: The complete code will be released as open source. Only the engine will be given as an object file. If a commercial publication is planned percentage share of the profit have to be given to us. The level has to be negotiated with the developer. If the game is going to be published as freeware we will waive the financial claims. PD,- shareware or something like that are not allowed. The level of development is at fifty percent. If there are competent programmers we would continue working on pictures if desired.
We regret this decision and hope you show understanding of it. If you want to write something to this topic please mail to the programmer because I have no influence on it no longer. The homepage will be online during the next time. I will complete the list of interested people if I will get mails with this content. 8.12.2k Hyperion Worker Talks About The Mediator Design
On #amiga (irc.whiterose.net) one of the guys from Hyperion was chatting about the design of the Mediator: "They've shown some really clever ways to keep their costs down in design, certainly... All of their hardware consists of ONE logic chip which they use repeatedly, as many as necessary.", "They design all their own components, so no need to buy expensive external glue logic.", "Their PCI bus, for instance, is entirely their own implementation, no glue chipsets from a 3rd party manufacturer.", "For instance there was a bug in the FastATA 4000 hardware, and they had to send out replacement chips to fix it. FPGA could just be reprogrammed.", FastATA 4000 is "EIDE controller for Z3. The ONLY one." "Umm it implements the fast ATA modes. like PIO-4, etc. So I get better performance out of IDE drives.", "Again, like all their other products, their IDE implementation is their own, using the same chip they use on all their products. :-) Pretty cool." "Well it also does PIO-5 but Z3 has trouble with it."

We have all rights that are needed to sell Genesis. We bought these rights from the manufacturer Active Technologies this August. We announced all of this 4 weeks later. 1.12.2k Where is ASM-One V1.45 ?
Boushh: "I know I promised to release ASM-One V1.45 on the 30th of November 2000. And I was planning to do just that. BUT:
Today and yesterday I started adding pasting to the Clipboard to ASM-One, and thanks to somebody who helped me, today ASM-One was able to past copied text to the Clipboard.
Since this is a feature which should have been build into ASM-One years ago, and many people have asked for it, I thought I would give myself just another few days to also add coping from the Clipboard.
This will also give me some extra time to spend on the new RTG version of ASM-One. So I can fix some strange/annoying bugs and maybe even do some optimization to speed things up (because it's terrible slow at the moment).
AND, I can update the ASM-One manual a little bit. Like adding Clipboard stuff.
ASM-One V1.45 (both normal and RTG) will now be released at the 5th of December 2000 (which is, not coincedentially, some kind of a national holiday here in the Netherlands B-)
I hope that you are not to much disapointed by this. You'll get Clipboard and RTG compatibility after all!"
