28.11.2001 Cloanto released today version 5.0 of Amiga Forever
Cloanto released today version 5.0 of Amiga Forever, the official Amiga emulation and connectivity package for PCs. New features include just-in-time (JIT) compiler technology to dramatically increase execution speed, new ROM and operating system files to emulate not only the Amiga computers but also Commodore's CDTV and CD³² game consoles, and Software Manager, a content delivery and management system for one-click news, updates and downloads. An experimental version of the revolutionary Disk2FDI software, which makes it possible to read Amiga floppy disks on the PC, is provided for the technically inclined. Other improvements include support for new Windows XP and DirectX features and new Picasso96 technology to better map Amiga graphics calls to low-level DirectX functionality and native x86 code, in order to achieve maximum performance without sacrificing compatibility. Cloanto publicly benchmarked the new version of the emulation software to be 30 times faster than the previous version (which already matched the CPU performance of the fastest Amiga 68060 silicon). Amiga Forever can be installed or run from CD-ROM (no installation or reboot required), and is also available in a downloadable Online Edition. In either case, Amiga application can run side by side with the host operating system and its applications, while taking advantage of features such as virtual memory, advanced power management, digital rights management, NTFS filing system, wireless networking, and thousands of past, present and future drivers for peripherals, specifications and gadgets which the Amiga would otherwise not be able to support. For additional information please refer to the Amiga Forever home page at amigaforever.info.

23.11.2001 Elbox SharkPPC should work in Prometheus unless Elbox prevents it
Matay's PR & marketing guy Grzegorz Juraszek posted a follow up to the SharkPPC topic on ANN.lu: "I see no reason why Shark wouldn't work with Prometheus, provided Elbox doesn't put any protection against it in the flashROM of the card. As for hinting: it is pretty obvious that if not the same, both cards are at least based on the same reference board (by IBM). That's why making drivers shouldn't be a big problem even if Elbox won't want to publish documentation (as usually)."
Adam Kowalczyk follows up with: "If you've been at the Yahoo Prometheus Group recently, Krashan has indicated that Matay has been working on getting bus mastering working on the Prometheus. The board will have to have the PLDs reprogrammed to accomplish this. Looking at the hardware, it's provided with the ability to have them reprogrammed (CN6 and CN7)."

19.11.2001 Warp3D support for Permedia 3 and ATI Radeon.
Hyperion Entertainment has entered into an agreement with third parties to ensure Permedia 3 and ATI Radeon support for Warp3D, effectively doubling the number of supported chipsets.
"We are thrilled to be able to open up ever more possibilities to users of Amiga PCI busboards", says Ben Hermans, managing partner of Hyperion Entertainment. "The Permedia 3 is around 6 times faster than the Permedia 2 and offers a lot more functionality including full OpenGL compliance. The chipset is still frequently used in high-end 3D workstations. The ATI Radeon family is undeniably state of the art with well-rounded 2D performance and top-notch 3D performance that is on par with anything out there in the Wintel world. Support for the Radeon family will allow Amiga users to enjoy unrivalled performance and functionality."

o Generic PCI driver for different PCI boards.

o Is to run on all Amigas with PPC, whereby the Blizzard of the performance could make problems.
o 68k-Emulation (JIT version) is integrated.
o AmigaDE will be added.
o Java is to also come (however not directly with the first version)
o price: approximately like Amiga OS V3.5 or V3.9.
o Amiga ZorroII and ZorroIII cards are to be supported.

Aspired date for completion is February 2002.

"Today was the deadline for the ExoticA Intro Logo Competition. However, I have decided to extend it to the end of the month so that people have more time to get their entries in. The deadline will now be the 30th November. I will not alter this date (Promise!) :)
There is no limit to the number of entries per person so draw as many as you like :) There will also most likely be a prize for the 2nd/3rd place logos, but it depends the kind of response I get for the competition. Although there are no rules regarding the design of the logo (Apart from the 600 pixel width limit), logos incorporating an Amiga related theme will probably go down well with the judge :)

13.11.2001 Good and bad news
"The bad: I will stop development of StopMenu.
In the last weeks I worked with full power on StopMenu - only to rename the variables and functions (some still polish or whatever), to add some commentaries (there were quiet none) and to try to change some parts. As final surprise one of many tests made my Amiga crash and thereby destroyed the source code, the work of many days. This and the belief that changing StopMenu is harder and needs more time than writing an own program caused my decision. StopMenu was not only bad written and commented (well, it has grown piecewise and has got the errors from both programmers ;) - no, it also has some very restricting, old fashioned program parts that should be replaced by a modern method.
Before you get the possibility to jump out of the window, here's the good news: One learns from each error. I've seen so many errors ;) that I now want to make Choowin replace StopMenu !! It is written in best C++, uses Reaction, and last but not least I know what I have programmed. And that's not all - the prefs part of StopMenu is not forgotten, but replaced by a connection to MainPrefs !! So both programs will form the beginning of the new environment, where also ClassAction can join. The new project will consist of the taskbar with start menu that allows to open the prefs and later the file manager. Other programs will have the possibility to get an icon in the taskbar.
That's a lot - but the three programs exist, Choowin will grow to StopMenu's functionality (well, not exactly the same) and all of them will be joined to the new MRE ("mainmenu with Reaction enhancements")."

All of you who attended the Amiga99© Computer show, hosted by Amigan-St. Louis's Bob and Diana Scharp in St. Louis, MO a few years back, will certainly remember the banquet. Dr. Linda Godwin, a current astronaut and her husband, Col. Steve Nagel (retired USAF), a former astronaut and current NASA employee, were two unforgettable speakers. Linda not only spoke of her exploits in the space program, she brought a video that blew our (Amiga) socks off.
Well, it's Linda's turn to go into space again. I have heard that she is scheduled to launch November 29. The mission calls for her and several other astronauts to go to the new space station, and return several days later.
I know I speak for all of you when I say that Diana and I wish her the very best flight and a soft touchdown back on earth. Read more

6.11.2001 PowerPC G5 hits 2.4GHz
"Motorola has released the latest update to its PowerPC 8500 - aka G5 - processor that ups AltiVec performance and delivers consistent 1GHz and up clock speeds, one of our Apple sources tells us.
Indeed, the source claims, two of the chips in the sample set of CPUs sent to the Mac maker, clocked at 2.4GHz. Most, however, ran at 1GHz, 1.2GHz or 1.4GHz, and some - a "considerable number", says our Deep Throat - operate at 1.6GHz." Read more

Mpega.library clone using the very excellent libmad for decoding, it looks and behaves just like the original, but with several benefits offered by libmad:
- Supports 8kHz streams (the original decodes these wrong)
- Supports FreeFormat (upto a whopping 640kbps) streams
- Very high quality decoding (better than the FPU version of the original)
- Very low CPU usage (integer original is still slightly faster on 68k though)

5.11.2001 AmigaOS 4.0 contract signed
"Yes the contract was signed - and yes it was the real contract, not just a mockup for publicity reasons" - Alan, Eyetech CEO

Alan explained that the contract gave Eyetech, Hyperion, H+P etc the right to develop os4.0. Amiga Inc will then take control of the OS back for a 'consideration'.

Ben Hermlans, Hyperion: "'Consideration' is a legal term used in the contract law of common law countries such as the UK and the US. It refers to the benefit (money, action, transfer of property etc.) one contractual party can hope to receive from the other."

Ben Hermlans, Hyperion: "Stop whining please and get your ass to the Cologne show [..] reserve judgement until that date."
